| irbykb's Full Review: Breads of India |
Breads of India is my longtime favorite Bay Area Indian eatery. The atmosphere is authentic but minimalistic. In this small restaurant, the tables are packed tightly together; the noise level is slightly high. It seems that there are almost as many workers as there are diners!
The cuisine at Breads of India is, for lack of better words, absolutely fabulous! They prepare everything with a healthy conscious. Many dishes are prepared with extra virgin olive oil, disputing the fatty, buttery Indian restaurant stereotype.
The menu at Breads of India changes daily. Usually, there will be 3 meat dishes (free range organic chicken, Niman Ranch lamb) and 2 vegetarian dishes. The menu offers an detailed description of each traditional dish, plus suggests a bread to go with each dish. You can order a bread sampler if you can't decide which bread to order. The descriptions of the entrees also includes what region of India each entree originated in; this is how they choose what bread goes with which dish.
Dishes usually include: tandoori chicken (very popular), chicken & spinach in a creamy curry sauce, lamb stewed with tomatoes and eggplant, marinated cauliflower curry, chicken stewed with coconut & tomatoes, stewed vegetable medley. (These dishes are listed by their Indian names on the menu.) All entrees are served on a big plate with basmati rice, yellow lentil dahl (delicious), and a small mixed greens salad. Most dishes have fair to medium spiciness, and you can order spicy sauce if it's not enough for you.
A recent favorite: free range, organic chicken marinated in fenugreek and rosemary skewered and grilled to perfection. It comes out sizzling on an iron skillet, and is served with basmati rice and salad with mint sauce. The perky red curry sauce is a little bit extra, but they are not shy on the portion so it's well worth it.
There are no appetizers at Breads of India, which may be it's only drawback. Also, the mango juice and mango lassi is not good. But the food is so fresh and delicious, it completely makes up for these lackings.
The dessert menu usually has two choices. Recent options have been fried milk balls (much better than it sounds). They are kind of like doughnut holes, except they are soaked in a cardamom flavored syrup. Also, pistachio rice pudding is absolutely divine.
Breads of India is incredibly reasonable. Entree prices range from $6.50 to $11.50, usually the meat dishes are the most expensive. Bread is extra.
Reservations are not taken at Breads of India. If you go when it is busy (weekends, sometimes weeknights), expect to sign your name on the clipboard outside and wait, anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes. Don't let that scare you away. The food is served fairly quickly, so the turnover rate is high. Unless you have a larger party, you probably won't have to wait for very long. I have never waited more than 15 minutes for a table.
Most children I know have sensitive palates, so unless your child likes spicy food, I don't recommend Breads of India for children.
