oldskater's Full Review: Ruth Yaron - Super Baby Food
Before I heard of the Super Baby Food book, I always thought that babies shouldn't be eating the same food as adults. The Gerber baby only eats special food from little expensive jars, so that must be what is best for babies, right? WRONG!
Like all new parents, I received a ton of junk mail advertising everyday after my daughter was born. When I came across the mailer for Super Baby Food, I was intrigued. I bought the book and by reading found out what should have been common sense-that babies are just tiny people so why shouldn't they be eating the same food as us? Obviously, not heavily spiced/buttered/salted, etc., like we eat ours, but just blander versions of the same food.
Upon this revelation, I felt betrayed by the commercial baby food industry for brainwashing me into believing that expensive, frequently genetically modified food with lots of additives and preservatives was best for my baby. This enlightening book showed me that not only is it very economical and convenient to make your own baby food, but it is actually a superior food for my baby. The book has more information than you could possibly use regarding making and storing baby food and age appropriate recipes and meal plans. It also contains recipes for making other foods for the whole family, such as peanut butter and yogurt. And, it even has recipes for making your own natural household cleaners.
This book is a definite must have for anyone who is either trying to save money on baby food or who is simply looking for a better alternative to those little jars of food.
The only drawback to this book is that it reminds me of those Chronicles of Narnia books that I read as a kid. As you're reading along there are constant references to other things. For example, you may be reading on page 5 about pears being appropriate for a six month old, then it will tell you to turn to page 74 to find out how to prepare them. Once you turn to that page, it might tell you to turn to page 291 to find out about using pear juice as a cleaning solution. Ok, obviously I made up that example, but the point is that you'll need lots of bookmarks if you're going to read this book. Some people may actually find this style helpful, but for me it is very distracting.
