If you're looking for a sushi experience that's truly something special, one that will make you stop and admire every piece of delicious fish, look no further than Bond Street. Located off Lafayette Street on Bond Street in NoHo, Bond Street restaurant is a multi-level establishment with dining on the first and second floors, as well as a lounge below street level.
Even if you can't stand traditional martinis, begin your dining experience in the lounge or at the upstairs bar with Bond Street's own special libation--the green tea martini. It's mellow, slightly sweet taste will surely make you a devotee of this unique cocktail.(Although obtaining a reservation can be difficult, the lounge offers the option of first-come, first-serve seating and you can enjoy the same sushi in this more relaxed atmosphere.) Upstairs, in addition to tables, there is a sushi bar at the back of the restaurant which allows diners to see the master sushi chefs at work.
Wherever you sit, you'll start your meal with complementary edamame, the Japanese treat of salted, steamed soy beans. Although Bond Street offers almost everything a typical sushi restaurant does, everything is a little bit better. Even the dinner salad will excite the palate, with its perfect ginger dressing and crisp shavings. When you're ready to move on to the sushi, sample the spicy tuna roll, eel roll, and lobster tempura roll, all of which come with dipping sauces that are the ideal partner to each type of roll. Pieces of sushi are exceedingly fresh and served artistically, making every morsel a delight. If you're not a sushi fan, Bond Street offers many interesting entree options. My favorite is the exceptional sea bass with miso glaze.
Unlike most sushi restaurants, Bond Street also offers a more extensive dessert menu, exceeding the usual green tea ice cream, with a host of delicious toppers to the meal. Start to finish, Bond Street is a restaurant I would recommend to anyone who enjoys sushi and is looking for something a little bit more exciting. Although getting a table can be difficult and the price can be a bit high (a recent trip with a friend cost in the neighborhood of $80, including drinks, salads, several rolls and one entree), the food and atmosphere are worth it.
