| sunnydayM's Full Review: Bayer Advantage |
A little over two years ago I wrote a review on Bayer Advantage, in which I stated that I would never use it again. This was based on a one time experience, in which I had treated my cats with Advantage, and the fleas dropped off onto the carpet, and then jumped on me! Most distressing, I assure you.
This year, we had a great influx of fleas in our area. They were so bad, that my cat, Boots, was horribly infested. And I didn't have to put anything on him to make the fleas drop onto the floor. They were everywhere. We had to wear insect repellent in the house. The cats refused to be on the floor at all. They traveled through the house jumping chair to chair to table, to couch, etc. Very annoying, too. But I couldn't blame them. The carpet was a flea jungle. Home flea spray wasn't keeping up with the invasion.
I bought Control flea collars for both my cats. They seemed to help Faith, but Boots continued to suffer, and we still had hordes of them in the house. I was using flea spray on the carpets and furniture daily, and it still didn't seem to dent the flea population.
I bought Control flea dip and used that on Boots. It had worked in the past. This time, it made him ill, and I had to shampoo it off. Nothing seemed to work.
Boots became lethargic, and refused to eat and drink. He was so weak, I was certain he would die. I took him to the vet, who told me he had become anemic due to the fleas draining so much blood. He applied Bayer Advantage.
We were leaving on vacation in a couple of days and boarding the cats there. He told me if Boots didn't improve in a day or two to bring him in early. Boots deteriorated. I took him back and left him to get a blood transfusion. The next day I took Faith out to be boarded along with Boots for the following week.
Boots had drastically improved. He was like a different cat. Faith also received an Advantage treatment.
Before we left on vacation, I set off flea bombs in the house to rid it of any remaining flea popluation.
The Advantage seems to be doing a terrific job. The only fleas we get now are the ones which Faith brings in when she sneaks outside. Both of the cats have become inside cats now, whether they want to or not.
According to the information I obtained from the Advantage web site, the adult fleas begin dying within 12 hours. Advantage has a larvacide which kills the larva as well as the adult fleas. The larva lurking in the pets play and sleep areas die within twenty minutes of coming in contact. This makes it much easier to control the infestation. This larvidacide is called Imidacloprid.
Advantage is very easy to apply. You carefully break open the little plastic vial and drop the fluid between your cats shoulder blades. It is a little oily for a short while, but is soon absorbed. And the cat cannot reach it to lick it off from that spot. It is effective for about four weeks. (Which reminds me, Boots and Faith are due their next dose!)
You can get it in a multi dose pack of three applications for about $20. You cannot purchase it over the counter. You must get it from your vet. The package will last one cat three months.
My daughter told me that Advantage also renders the adult fleas sterile. I did not see that when I visited the web site, so I don't know if she is right or wrong. But it sounds good. :)
I have to recant everything I said about Advantage two years ago. My vet told me it is the best thing he has found for fleas, and I must admit it certainly has ended our flea problem. Our home is now a happier place for cats and Mom. No fleas biting us anymore! And the cats will walk on the floor again.
