| vcrimson's Full Review: Babyking Cool Teether |
Babyking Cool Teethers are simply a must-have item for your infant!
I remember my brother having one when he was a baby, and I used to always take it because I thought it was such a cool thing. I couldn't wait to get one for my daughter when she was born!
Babyking's broad range
The category title here is pretty general, it just says Babyking Cool Teether, but it doesn't mention any specific one. Babyking has a few different types of "cool teethers"
We have had 2 different ones:
The first one was a soft ring made of little round pouches of distilled water. This ring is made of clear plastic and has pictures on each of the little "water pouches." It's very soft and easy to squeeze. The water easily flows between the pouches which are just slightly underfilled. This is a good feature because by underfilling them slightly, they have a bit more give and there is less chance of bursting them. Although if they do burst, don't worry, it is just distilled water. I love the smell of these things....I don't know exactly what it is, but they just smell like babies....There are some scents that just always make you think of babies, like the smell of baby powder, or of Johnson&Johnson baby lotion...and the smell of these soft plastic water-filled teethers....If you've ever had one, you'll know what I'm talking about.
The second type of Babyking Cool Teether that we got was made of a harder plastic. It was still translucent, and still chewable, and still water-filled, but this material was much more durable. It also was covered in little "nubs." This variety comes in dozens of shapes and colours. We bought a pack which contained 2 teethers. One was shaped like a pretzel and the other was shaped like a duck! The pretzel teether is the one that my brother had when he was a baby. I bet anyone my age will remember the pretzel teethers, I think they were the only sort they made back in the 70's!!
Compare and Contrast
Now that the boring details are out of the way, let's take a deeper look at these 2(3) teething toys!
Both varieties can be put in the fridge and cooled. Neither one can go in the dishwasher...which is OK by me since I don't have a dishwasher anyways. They both recommended not freezing, because water expands and it might break the teether, however, I have successfully frozen the heavier one(the pretzel and duck). I just did not freeze it completely.
It seems to me that the ring type is more suitable for smaller infants, infants who have NO teeth yet. The nubbed are great for infants with or without any teeth. My daughter personally never bit through her ring teether, but I have seen other children bite through them once they've got teeth. In fact, my daughter never really chewed on the ring one much at all. She would put it in her mouth for a bit and that was that. She liked it better as a bracelet once she got older.
The nubbed one, however got a lot of teething use!
Why the nubs???
Simple...they feel sooooo good on the gums!!!!!!(I know this from chewing on my brother's...you see, he's 4 years younger on me, and so he was teething about the same time I was losing baby teeth!)
I'm not going to get super technical here, but there are certain chemicals released by your brain when pressure is put on the nerves in your gums. These chemicals calm you. They also help concentration. They also make you feel better. This is why people chew gum(or pencils) during exams! So when your infant puts this little teether between his/her gums and bites down on it, those little nubs are putting pressure against the nerves, which in turn makes the little one feel better. (unfortuneately only while the pressure is on!) It is a very satisfying feeling for them to have those nubs rubbing their gums!!! I would guess this is why my daughter always chose the pretzel or the duck over the ring teether. The ring teether was just cool and squishy...The pretzel and duck were not only cool and slightly squishy but they were stimulating as well!
So what do I recommend?
The ring teether is fun to play with and fun to look at, but for real teething relief get the Babyking Cooling Teether that has more bite for the buck! Not only will it withstand those first few teeth, but it will feel much better on those sore little gums! Go for the nubs! You won't be sorry! But stock up on the Orajel and baby Tylenol as well!
