nibor's Full Review: Aqua Glycolic Facial Cleanser 6 oz
There must be something wrong with my skin.
Somewhere in the past few years, I've decided that I really should try to look after my wonderful facial skin just a little bit better than I used to.
Dove soap seemed to fit the bill and it's worked for me for a long time. But recently, I had a little make up applied by a professional and she convinced me that any bar soap was not good. She talked me into buying a set of Clinque and it was wonderful. And it was expensive.
When the Clinique ran out I went shopping to see if I could find a better price. What I found was a whole host of products.
One of the ones that caught my eye was Aqua Glycolic. It was reasonably priced and there were 5 star reviews galore. I studied the reviews and thought this product sounded perfect. Plus Aqua means water. It had to be good for you.
The facial cleanser comes in a pump squirt bottle with a nice clear plastic lid that fits snugly over top. I think it would pack fairly safely in a suitcase without an accident.
When you press the pump, just the right amount of an opaque liquid comes out. It has no odour. The first couple of times I used it, it tingled. But my face also started breaking out. I got some red pimples on my temples and my lower cheek area. I found it hard to believe it could be the cleanser so I kept using it until around the end of the first week when I went to wash my face and the cleanser no longer tingled, it hurt.
It hurt enough to say Ow. I figured I'd better find out what Glycolic meant.
From Wisegeek.com "Glycolic acid is perhaps the best-known of a group of chemicals called fruit acids or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). It is derived from sugar cane, so it can be considered a natural product. Citric acid from oranges and other citrus fruits also fall under the same classification as glycolic acid."
Now that explains it. If I eat too many oranges, the area around my mouth turns red and burns. I have a sensitivity to this stuff.
The site goes on to explain that this is a mild acid and commonly used for face peel-type potions. It really isn't harmful.
I'm happy to report that as soon as I stopped using it and went back to my trusty Dove, my face cleared up quickly.
