LRai's Full Review: Apple iPod touch 2nd Generation (8 GB) MP3 Player
I travel alot, in fact I'm usually living abroad most of the year. I was talking to friends this last trip home and bemoaning the fact that when I travel the one thing I miss most is not be able to read books. When I do get home the one thing I do is read anything I can get my hands on. It's just too much weight and bother to pack books to take along then once your done reading them what to do? As I complained about this I had no idea that my friends were about to give me a gift of an iTouch.
Now this isn't something I'd have bought myself in 100 years, I am so not technically adapted, but they told me I could put all the books I ever wanted to read on it, not to mention music, photos, I could do just about anything with this little tool. They put it in my hand and I went into shock, not just that I knew it was an expensive gift but also how the heck would I learn to use it.
I'm a dinosaur when it comes to technology, it took me forever just to get up the courage to buy a laptop, now I was holding something in my hand that could do almost everything my laptop could do...that was scary to me. The first thing my friend had me do was let him download applications to the iTouch. Then he showed me how to access Kindle Books, within a matter of hours I was on Amazon ordering the free books and having them download instantly to my iTouch. It was actually easy, imagine that. By the time I was done I'd downloaded over 20 books, and they'd all be able to come with me to China. Next I had a lesson on how to upload my music, that too was relatively easy and in no time I had over 2 days of music on my iTouch.
Now I won't tell you that I didn't have some issues, like when I tried to download music and books by myself the next day I still had some issues, but they were my issues not a problem with the iTouch. Overall with a few lessons I was up and running in no time really.
My friends outfitted me with earphones, a rubbercase that gave the iTouch a measure of protection and some other cords that I believe link it with my computer...like I said I'm not that good at this stuff.
I went to MacSuperstore and purchased a few more items that if you travel alot like I do you may want. I got the invisible Shield to protect the screen, mini speakers (and I do mean mini), and a power charger that would work overseas. All told this has changed the way I travel, I can now take my books and music along and I've no issues about the weight or bulk. The iTouch fits into a cosmetic case that I bought and that fits neatly into my backpack. I can carry it all and it weights not even a pound, not bad.
I've never been an Apple person, in fact I've avoided Apple because it's just easier when abroad to use PC computers, but this has changed my mind about Apple and I might even consider getting a computer of theirs one day.
So far I've used my iTouch for over 2 months and I have few complaints, it holds a charge well and I can get up to 10 hours before having to recharge it. Reading isn't a problem because I'm already used to using a small screen, my laptop is a 10 inch Sony Vaio. I like many of the features and in time I'm sure I learn whatelse it can do as I leave my fear factor at the door and get tempted to play with it more. For now it's great having it for my music and I love the fact I can read books again overseas.
I'd thought about getting a Kindle but they won't work abroad in some countries so that made it fairly useless, however the iTouch let's me download books and take them with me, that made it a great choice. It's also smaller than a Kindle which I also liked. It also does more than a Kindle which is another plus. Overall even though I'd of never thought to buy this for myself I more than pleased that my friends did.
