300 is the film version of Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same title, telling the story of an heroic battle between 300 spartan warriors and the entire massed forces of the Persian invaders as they prepared to take Greece. It's a epic tale of valour, sacrifice and being ready to fight for the freedom you believe in even when the simplest path seems to be to give in and surrender. This being a Hollywood action movie, expect extreme sword related violence, beautifully choreographed fights and black and white characterisations.
The story follows the king of Sparta, Leonidas, from his childhood to finding out that the Persians are about to invade his beloved country. Consulting the local oracles with his plan to defend the island they tell him not to fight, as to do so would anger the gods during one of their festivals. Leonides decides to risk the fate of the gods, and his government, by taking 300 of his finest men 'out for a walk' to Hells Pass - where he intends to mount a defense against the invaders in a thin valley. From this point in it's all action, with stunning fights between the opposing sides of varying types. Limbs fly, blood spurts, heads take a vacation from necks and there is much partially clothed Greek muscle if you're into that kind of thing. Oh, and there's lots of bodies lying around (if that isn't obvious).
Like Sin City, another of Frank Miller's graphic novels that has been successfully transferred to film, Zack Snyder - 300's director - decided to keep the movie version extremely faithful to the original style. What this means in practice is saturated colors, dark shadows and extreme viewpoints that are atypical of most movies but common in the comic book form. This leads to an interesting visual experience, and an enjoyable piece of mental stimulation outside of all the fighting.
Don't expect complex acting, it's pretty one dimensional, but that fits well within the overall story. There are good turns from all of the actors, amazing special effects and an enjoyable story. It almost makes me want to defend Sparta with my life.
