Daddy, this car can keep up with the Porche Cayenne from 0 to 100 km/h, announced my son. So i took it to a european highway to test it full speed.
I had the pleasure to drive a hybrid toyota prius, that was really amazing me. So now i went testing the luxury hybrid: the Lexus H400. First impression: the car is high, but not very large, a bit tight for a luxury car.
Then starting the car... no noise...the hybrid miracle comes in! You start moving, and when the traditional engine starts to bring you to a higher speed, it keeps incredibly silent inside. Indeed, acceleration is impressive, and the silence is replaced by a roaring engine when accelerating violently. The car stays very stable even when fully breaking at very hight speed in large curves. Maybe a bit less stable than the Volvo XC90 in the same test, but still very stable for a SUV.
Then the very high speed on the highway close to the german border. Speed goes up, and around 117 MPH there is still largely power available. I decide not to go faster, because of traffic around me. The noise in the car is getting really disturbing at speeds over 80 MPH, much more than one would expect from a luxury car (especially wind noise). An quick acceleration test gives me easily under 8 second to go from 0 to 100 km/h (63 mph), surely with an official test this can be improved, but that will be less nice for the mechanical parts of the car.
It really does not give the impression of a sportive car however. Then we made a small trip off road: just a country road with some mudd and grass. Well: in two minutes i gave up: this car will wrestle itself out of some mudd, but it is definitely not an off-roader.
Back to the garage the fuel consumption indicates 16 MPG
(15 liter on 100 km). Now, normal use will stabilize around 24 MPG, but only when using the car in an economical way.
My conclusion: for pure luxury, there are better cars, especially the top end german cars. For pure sport, the Cayenne is far more interesting, or any real sportscar will be more interesting. For off-road, i will keep my Landcruiser, for the space inside too.
For fuel-economy: get the toyota prius. If you want just a bit of all, you might consider the Lexus!
