Yamaha's new TTR 125 is a great easy to ride fun/trail bike. I purchased it for trail riding and chasing my son on his ATV. For that purpose it fits the application just perfectly. I wound up buying it almost by default. I was looking for a relatively inexpensive bike that I can toss into the back of my Chevy Astro van along with my kid's Lem ATV.
Originally I was looking at the Honda XR100 but all dealers in the So Calif. area were completely out of stock. Used Hondas were asking $1700 -$2000. The TTR 125 was about $100 more than the Honda but you get 25cc more... it seem like it was worth it.
The specs show a dry weight of approximately 185 pounds and I have been able to load it into the van without the use of a ramp. A bumper or trailer hitch mount would probably work (no need for a trailer). This bike fits an interesting niche, its is not a high performance model but it has enough power to put it ahead of the "toy" class. It has reasonable performance (top speed around 40-45 mph), excellent gas mileage (less than 1/3 tank used after a half day of riding - 1 tank should last all day). The 5 speed tranny is smooth and the suspension is adequate for most terrain. Torque is excellent for a small engine... it never lugged going up moderate grades.
The bike is very comfortable and easy to ride, most adult riders will be able to plant both feet on the ground with this one. It is not too big or heavy so an older child should also be able to handle it. I was told by the dealer that the majority of his customers are adults rather than kids. It will carry 150-200 lbs without any strain. You don't get a lot of speed but the engine never feels overworked. The four stroke is smooth without the buzz normally associated with a two stroke.
I cannot really give it a reliability rating since it is so new. So far it starts easily, the idle was a bit low and probably will need some adjustment. The 3 year extended warranty is nice thing to have but you basically wind up paying for service in advance.
Cost $2900 out the door with 3 year extended warranty. As of mid-March 2000, No dealers are giving any deals due to the fact that this is a brand new model. The cost breaks down to 2650 for the bike and 250 for the extended warranty. I was planning on spending 2600 but the dealer pushed the warranty (they originally wanted to charge $400)
Overall I am quite pleased with the bike, the price is not cheap but consistent with the market price of comparable models. From what I see on the resale market, it should hold its value quite well.
