The Bottom Line: I recommend it because it,s comfortable, hard to get stuck, powerful and reliable. My 450 Honda Foreman was reliable but thats just not enough for me anymore at my age.

| crashed13's Full Review: 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500 |
I,m north43 and owned a 89 350 4x4 Yamaha Big Bear and a 2000 450ES Honda Foreman before buying a used 2001 Sportsman 500 H.O. I have ridden my fishing friends 98 600 Grizzly,03 660 Grizzly and 05 500 Foreman in rugged Northern Ontario Canada so many times it's like I owned them,so I know what different ATVs are like.
I loved my Honda 450 Foreman but after trying the belt dive Grizzlies ATVs I found I loved the part about not shifting to stay in the right power band on long hilly trail rides. The Foreman also lacked the speed and power required on the wider smoother logging roads with long inclines to keep up with my friends. I then sold the Foreman and blindly bought a used 2001 SP500 only because I had good like with Polaris Sleds, and boy I picked right.
The first thing I noticed is how smooth it rode over the once rugged trail that use to break my back on the Foreman.Even on smooth gravel roads the Sportsman is much more pleasurable to ride. I know this is do to the IRS suspension but even the my friends IRS 660 Grizzly does not have a ride like this and he's the first to admit it.
The long incline fast logging road sections that caused my Foreman to lose speed and need a down shift or two are nothing to blast up now. I give it gas midway up the incline while going faster than I ever could before and the Polaris still will break the rear wheels loose and fishtail and pick up more speed!
The true AWD is much better than the 3x4 of the other ATVs,many times you see both font wheels tuning at the same time and you notice the extra traction of all 4 wheels working in many situations. Some ATVs like the 660 Grizzly have a locker system for true 4wd but you must stop put it in this mode than once trough the ugly stuff stop again and put it back in 3x4 or 2x4 drive.Only Polaris
offers FULL TIME TRUE 4 WHEEL DRIVE when in 4wd mode.
One Crazy thing Polaris is doing with there Sportsman's 500s is making there gas tanks smaller!! There are no gas station where we ride and extra rack space for carrying extra gas is not always a option when camping and fishing.
Examples. A 2001 SP500 has a 5.25 gal tank.
A 2004 SP500 has a 4.75 gal tank.
A 2006 SP500 H.O has a 4.25 gal tank.
A 2006 SP500 EFI has a 4.13 gal tank.
