Pros: Build quality. DCDi upconversion. HDMI. Overall media compatibility. Cons: Picture quality especially black level. Fast foward control.
Having recently purchased a tube HDTV set with true 1080i capability (not downconverted 1080i as found in most LCD projection or DLP units), I felt an HDMI capable DVD player would be a nice addition. Having priced out some of the Denon models with DCDi ...

Pros: Thin, light-weight, HDMI Connection, DCDI/Faroudja Chip. Cons: Basic picture quality, does not play certain DVD movies, Greenish/Yelowish Skin tone, misleading by manufacturer.
I have been waiting for this player for a long time so I can combine it with my new Samsung 26" TX-P2670 Widescreen HD. I purchased it from the only retailer who had one available at the time, DELL for $299.99. I also own a Panasonic RP 91K ...

Not Quite As Good AS the HD841 Just Costs More!
by schafercorp ,Mar 21 '05
Pros: Design , Nice picture, DCDI, 1080i. 720p HDMI Cons: Lacks features for price. No inovation over it's siblings.
The comming SamsungDVD-HD850, DVD-HD950 maybe better.
This player should be better, lacks some features for the price, and fails to produce the picture quality of the cheaper HD841. Now I am not saying it does not have a better image than most current players it does. Tested with a 60" Hitachi LCD a Sony 50" LCD and a 30" Sanyo widescreen, CRT TV, it performs wonderful. But this has the higher end DCDI and should be better than the cheaper Samsung HD841. It does not.
The graphics are a shade less crisp. Overall since it is not on the market everywhere, find one onsale, then buy it, if you have the HDMI port. I will note that on the Sony tv I had to use a DVI to HDMI Monster converter, as with all the UPconvert players I have. But this cost as much as I paid for my Denon, and has no features like sharpness and contrast as does the Denon.
This player should have shown progress not just a HDMI connection. SAMSUNG is moving so fast into the Major player field of electronics, it seems this player got lost in the fray. Buy the HD931 or 841 and a DVI HDMI converter!

Was I the first to buy this???????????
by fredthemedic ,Dec 21 '04
Pros: small thin design, PICTURE QUALITY!!! Cons: one complaint---difficult to initially set up..
I purchased this dvd player from circuit city approx. a month ago. And let me say that everyone I have had over for parties involving football games and/or basketball games are asking to borrow this to see what kind of picture they will get on their HD televisions. The conversion is amazing. I currently own a 50" Samsung DLP television and the picture is the best HD one you will receive from a dvd player. The 6 channel audio output is similar to actually being in a theater. I highly reccommend this product.

Where is black level???
by an60098 ,Jan 16 '05
Pros: Excellent build quality Cons: Picture is "night"-dark, black level is out of control.
I own 2 Pioneer Plasmas 5040 & Elite 1120. I had Toshiba 5970 just before this player and it was EXCELLENT. This Samsung I've connected (via HDMI) right after Toshiba & tested it using the same movie I just played in Toshiba - very-very bad black level. There's no gray scale AT ALL. As if everything in that movie was shot in dark night. I'm returning Samsung a.s.a.p. and installing Toshiba back (eventhough Toshiba is not very nicely built).
