As your senses adjust to the overwhelming visual and audio stimulation that greets you at the front door, your attention may be drawn to the center of the casino, in which a replica of a mining rig appears to be in operation. If you allow yourself to walk up and explore, you will notice an elevator going directly up the center of the structure - get on it! Ride it up to the top and you may be in for the most enjoyable part of your visit to the Silver Legacy.
As you step off the elevator and walk down the pathway, you will at some point look up and realize you are inside the giant dome which has become a major focus point of the Reno skyline. Now you will be able to witness one of the variety of laser light shows that the Legacy puts on at various times of the year. If there isn't one happening at the moment, you may notice the dome changing color, clouds appearing on the surface, and lightning flashing with your favorite classical music in the background. By far the atmosphere of the casino is worth the trip into the Silver Legacy.
If you choose to visit and see the sites, do so on a Sunday morning so that you may take to opportunity to experience the Champaign Brunch Buffet at Sterlings, one of the best buffets in Reno. As you grab the plate and walk through the elegantly set up buffett line, your tastebuds will water at the sight of shrimp, oysters and sushi. Seafood not for you? Don't worry, there is a variety of other dishes, including blintzes, pancakes, lamb and an extensive omelet bar with a variety of ingredients. Once seated at your table, don't forget to sip on the champaign and orange juice provided for you - the quality is outstanding and compliments the meal nicely. Save room for the custom made deserts - they are undescribeable unless your tastebuds have been privileged enough to experience the flavors melting in your mouth.
If you have a room at the Silver Legacy, you may be ready to go up and relax after this magnificent brunch. I stayed in a suite with a hot tub in the room - and how relaxing this was. Unlike many other casino's, the rooms are tastefully decorated and extremely clean. The linen is fresh and there is a good supply. Depending on the location of the room, you may also aquire a beautiful view of the small city of Reno.
Perhaps the nicest thing about staying at the Silver Legacy when gambling is your motivation is that it is located in between the Eldorado and Circus Circus casinos, for gambling is not the reason to be at Silver Legacy. I am not going to talk about odds, for those are about the same anywhere you go. The service, to me, is what matters, and Silver Legacy lacks in this department. The employees are very unfriendly and act as though they are going out of there way to assist you. When you walk up to cash in your coins at a change booth, prepare to be frustrated by the "Employees only" window and the conversations between coworkers instead of having attention given to your needs. If your machine runs out of coins, prepare to wait 30 - 45 minutes while the employees run around trying to find other employees to help you, for everyone seems to be "babysat" in this casino. I also advice using paper money or getting coins before you sit in front of a machine, as a change person is impossible to find. As far as the tables, my experience has been either "fresh" dealers who didn't have much of a clue about their job, or dealers who forgot their personalities at home. Be prepared for multi-deck blackjack with $10 minimums - typical on the weekends. The tables will always be full, as the Legacy management seems reluctant to open a new table unless absolutely necessary. For the serious blackjack player this can be very frustrating.
The cocktail service is lousy, I have waited 1/2 or more for a drink only to be served a beverage of lousy quality. At the bars themselves I again run into employees more interested in talking to one another rather than their customers. (BTW normally if I read this in another review I would attribute the poor service to lack of tipping, but this is definitely not my problem. Being a Reno resident most of my life I figured out how to tip well a long time ago.)
If you are travelling with your children you will find little for them to do at Silver Legacy - my best advice is to go to Circus Circus where entertainment is present.
The location of the Legacy is convenient as it is situated right off the Virginia Street (the "strip" if you can call it such). There is plenty of free parking available in the casino's parking garage and there are also valet services free of charge.
There are reasons to go to the Silver Legacy, however, gambling is not one of them.
