Wouldn't Have Missed This Experience for the WORLD

Mar 11 '00

As soon as you know you are pregnant -- PLEASE, SEE A DOCTOR!! He will put you on Quality Pregnancy Vitamins. Mine were prescription strength.

At a couple months, you can hear your baby's heart beat. It is so exciting.

They weight you every time you go in and measure the width of your stomach and can tell if the baby is growing properly.

Around 4 months pregnant, you can feel your son/daughter kick, do somersaults, hiccup and through tantrums. Other people can feel him/her at about 5 months. My son through tantrums, when I would try to sleep on my back and when I would play the radio loud.

I was one of those women who thru up a lot the first 5 months. One thing I would advise, that you eat and then sleep, lay down, or (nap), if at all possible. It would keep me from losing my meal. Also, my Doctor advised me to take an occasional medicine, for really bad heartburn. Sometimes milk alone can cure it. Check with your Doctor on what exactly what to take for any pains, illnesses, etc.. BECAUSE.....An example, my sister's friend's mother took a prescribed medicine for sickness, when she was pregnant with my friend and it made my sister's friend's born with one arm missing. That was years ago and now they won't give it to pregnant women, but that doesn't help my sister's friend. Please, make sure any medicine including aspirin, pain medicine, etc.. is approved by your Doctor. I only take medicine that has been tested and been around for years.

I took an Ultrasound, when I was 5 months along. It is a wonderful experience. You can see the baby with good detail. They can tell if all the baby's fingers are there, most times which sex your baby is, and it is so fun to watch him/her move around. My sister's Doctor gave her a video. I was given a picture for my wallet. I showed friends for months.

If you have a birth defect that runs in your family, high-risk pregnancy, many miscarriages, etc.., you have them draw fluid from the sack, and then have it analyzed. It will tell you what sex your baby is with a 99.9% accuracy and more important and the only real reason for doing it, it checks for birth defects. Some people check because it gives them the option for an abortion and others who plan to have the baby despite the defects, check to be prepared for when their baby arrives, if they have to make special arrangements. Also, some defects they can correct, if they know in advance.

Pamper yourself occasionally. It's fun to go swimming, take walks, shop because there are so many things you will need -- bottles, crib, dresser, mobile(fun), swing(optional), stroller, car seat(must), etc.. There are many baby books that will tell you what exactly you should have by the time your baby comes home.

Decide in when pregnant what birth classes to attend, what if any pain medicines you will take during birth. I enjoyed my birth classes. We were shown how to bathe the baby, change diapers, birth breathing techniques, what exactly happens during the birth -- the cord being cut, the placenta coming out, etc.., and a film on Cesarean Section births. It's kind of funny, but the C-Section was the only class I missed and my son was born C-Section. It really was not as big a deal as I thought it would be. I was given pain medicine a few hours before birth. It worked great. After birth, I was given pain medicine until the pain was bearable(5 days for me) then it hurt when I lifted anything over around 8 pounds or get up or down for about 2 weeks. BUT.....if I would get really close to what I was lifting(usually my son), I didn't have pain. Also, if I would not bend at the waist, when getting up or down, I could avoid pain. Of course, I have a thin 4-inch scar, too. C-Sections are only for emergencies and happen to a small percent of women.

The BEST thing about being pregnant is you get to know your child's personality before anyone else. Is he/she active, and temperament, sensitive to sound,?????? My son from about 5 months pregnant would snuggle up under my hand on my stomach, when I went to sleep or was laying down. All his weight would shift to under my hand and after he was born he loved to snuggle.

I hope you enjoy your pregnancy or your wife's as much as I did.

Take care,
