Battling Nausea
Mar 15 '00
Many of us encounter nausea at some point in our pregnancies. There all kinds of solutions and myths on how to battle this. Here a couple things that I have found to work.
First of all, never let yourself get hungry. Eat just a little something like every 2 hours or so. You want to make sure you always have something in your belly. I know, this is hard to do when you are already nauseous, but it is the number one suggested way to fight nausea. Every OB I have seen has told me this.
Another solution I am sure you have all heard of is eating saltine crackers. I tend to steer toward the unsalted tops ones. With all the water weight we gain when we are pregnant, I tend to avoid extra salt. Eating these crackers really does help with the nausea. They are bland and put something in your belly without adding to your upset stomach with bold flavors or scents.
Recently, someone told me of another method of battling nausea. It is crystallized ginger. I hadn't tried it but I was really nauseous in the store one day, so I found some crystallized ginger (it is with the spices and seasonings). I opened it right there and tried it (with every intention of buying it regardless if it worked or not). It has a weird texture, like a gummy bear or something. However, it tasted terrible. I did work, though, just not immediately. It took about 15 - 20 minutes before I felt better. I would suggest if you are going to try this, have something handy to drink to get the flavor out of your mouth.
On the ginger theme, there are other ginger items you can try; gingerale, ginger tea, and ginger tablets. Ginger works for some people, and has no effect on others, but it doesn't hurt to try it.
Good luck in finding what works best for you to battle nausea during your pregnancy!
