I am in a relativaly succusful band; what I write is from experience and could most likely save you a lot of time and trouble.

I was reading a few of these opinions and thought I should give my two cents. Since I am in a band I have some practical knowledge. I am 18 years old and have been in 3 bands; two of which have played shows and two which have recorded. Of the Three bands only one of them has done both, my "first" band. Also only one is still around, guess which. Through this experience I am under the impression I might have a good idea about what it takes to have a succesful band. Personality, credible musical style and totalitarian command.
No matter what anybody says, personality is very important, you will not get by on music alone (e.g. Presidents of the U.S. of A., Marilyn Manson, Backstreet Boys, Kitty etcetc). None of the bands I just listed are at the top of their field (or even close) in talent or skill, what they share is antics that attract peoples attention; negative or positive.
Your band will most definately need personality to be succesful.
Understandably everyone wants to enlighten the world on new and mind expanding types of music, unfourtunately that is not the key to success. It is a good idea to chose something more crowd pleasing at first. I am not saying play Britney Spears if you are a metal band. I am suggesting play more popular gendres of metal to start with, maybe even hardcore (pop hardcore e.g. limpbizkit, slipnot... trash like that [for metal heads it is trash]. of if that example doesn't suit you, if you are into emo, play promise ring or... even Dave Mathews.. not whatever your most Impressionist pieces are. After you have accuired a stable fan base then show them the good stuff! If this method was good enough for the beatles and "the romantics" (classical music/ Amadeus was told that one of his pieces had too many notes); then why wouldn't it be good enough for you?
A head man, every band needs that big jerk control freak that tries to do everything her/himself. Most people in a band want to be part of it and want to do things as a team, and thats cool. BUT as far as I have observed team work should be left to making the different music parts, omiting lyrics or designs for shirts etc. PR stuff, setting up gigs, practices administrative stuff, should be left to one control freak. Otherwise things get to disorganised and chaotic. Anyway why not let the passionate take charge they obviously will put in the most effort. I have never been the front man of a band!

Apologies for spelling mistakes/ grammar/ punctuation/ typos etc.. I am at work typing this while I cover reception. I hope that inspite of that my message got through.
