Keep your "Cool" when Looking for a New "Icebox"
Oct 09 '00 (Updated Nov 21 '00)
There is nothing more frustrating than having your refrigerator quit on you in the middle of the "dog days" of August. As an appliance repair technician, I have seen it happen. What to do? You need a new fridge, but you are very pressed for time. Well, hopefully, as you are reading this, you are not in that predicament, but here are some tips to avoid being there:
#1. When in the market for a new refrigerator, consider your family size. It just wouldn't do to get an "apartment size" unit for a family with three or four kids. There is a wide range of sizes, starting at around 12 cu ft and going up to 22 cu ft. A family of 4 should be able to use a 16 cu ft model with ease. Add 2 cu ft for each adult, and 1 for each child above that.
#2. Decide how much room you have to place your refrigerator in. Within the ranges spoken of above, there are different measurements to the outside case depending on brand, model, and door configuration. A side-by-side will always take up more space than a freezer-on-top model of the same cubic footage.
#3. Depending on your budget, consider getting a model with ice and water thru the door. It will cost a little bit more initially, and will take a knowledgeable person to hook it up, but it will be a lifesaver for those constant calls for drinks of water from the kids.
Just remember, as in any major purchase, YOU call the shots (even if you are losing food as you read). If immediate action is required, look into a used appliance store near you. They should be able to help, either with a quick fix, or a cheap unit to "get you by" until you can find that "perfect" match of your needs and your budget.
