They Do More Than Just Heat Up Your Coffee

Apr 04 '00

You don't realize all the manufacturers updates in products that companies make in items such as microwave ovens until yours goes "kaput". You have this sense of urgency to replace this once thought of as a luxury but now as important as your coffeemaker in your daily life.

So what are some new updates in the last 5 years in microwaves?

* My favorite is the Compu defrost as mine is called on my Sharp microwave. It has ground meat, steaks/chops, and chicken pieces push pads. You push one of these pads with the weight of your meat and it will defrost it. If your food is not listed, you push 30% power by estimating defrosting time at 5 minutes per pound. So you don't cook your meat or still leave it frozen. This is a must if your like me and work all day and really don't know what you're going to fix for dinner until you think about it on the drive home.

* Another feature is the instant sensor which is a semi-conductor device that detects vapor (moisture and humidity) emitted from food as it heats. The sensor then can adjust cooking times and heating levels. My husband absolutely loves this for reheating everything from soup to a leftover casserole. No more guessing when something will be done. I also use this when I need boiling water for a recipe.

* I also find myself using the kitchen timer control frequently when I need to know when to adding something I'm cooking in five minutes. Just set the time and it dings 3 times to tell me my time is up.

* You may also look into buying one with instant action touch pads. These have several pads that feature auto configuration for popcorn, baked potato, fresh or frozen vegetable, frozen main dish and frozen or fresh roll.

* A turntable is a must if you've never had one before. It provides more even cooking by rotating the food.

Cubic feet and wattage are also important. Cubic feet is the interior size or capacity of the microwave. When shopping for ours, I saw them as small as .5 cubic feet up to 2.0 cubic feet. I chose one that was 1.0 cubic feet. I wanted something big enough so that I could put a 9 x 13 x 2 inch oblong glass baking dish in without any trouble. Also the higher the wattage, the faster the cooking times. My first one had like 600 watts. My new Sharp has 1000 watts, so everything cooks fairly quick.

There are the most commonly seen the counter-top model, over-the-range models, and built-in models for under or in cabinet space such as seen in travel trailers available from various dealers.

I hope this makes your next microwave purchase a little easier.
