| lawgirl's Full Review: GE Built-In Dishwashers |
I got this dishwasher as standard equipment in my new home. I thought "oh great- contractor's special- this thing won't work worth a crap!" Boy, was I wrong. I have been pleasantly surprised with this model. Mine has a black front and is really pretty stylish for a basic model. It also washes very well! Several times I have put in dishes with caked on stuff (even rice and oatmeal) and my dishes have come out looking great!
EXTERNAL FEATURES:
This dishwasher has several settings and buttons which help you choose a cycle that fits your washing needs.
First of all, it has four buttons in two groups along the front on the left side.
The first group is "Cycles" and the two options are "Potscrubber" and "Normal Wash". The Potscrubber is to be used for heavily soiled dishes with dried on or baked on foods. Normal Wash is for loads of everyday dishes with medium soil. I have personally never used the Potscrubber option because I have never needed to. The normal wash has taken care of even my grossest plates and pots without any trouble.
The other set of buttons is labeled "Energy Options" and gives you the option of turning the "heated dry" option on or off. If you turn this option on, the heating cycle is turned on and will dry your dishes faster, but it will extend the the to your wash cycle. If you turn it off, the dishes air dry naturally and energy is saved. I usually turn mine off, and I have had no problems with that. Every once in awhile a plastic cup will get turned over and collect water, but none of my dishes ever feel wet when I take them out. I also have had no problems with this option of having spots left on your dishes, with the exception of some Tupperware that showed some spots. (which is typical in my experience no matter what you do!) I really think this option works- last month for my whole house my water bill was only $17, and I run my dishwasher an average of 4 times a week (It's just me and my husband so we don't run it until we have a full load.)
This dishwasher also has a dial with 4 settings on it. The first is "Start" which will start a normal wash for you. There is also a "Short Wash" option that is for quickly washing loads of everyday dishes with medium soil that don't have anything dried on. Next is "Rinse and Hold" which will just rinse your dishes off. To be used for dishes that will be washed later. I don't consider this very efficient and have not used this option, but it is a neat one to have anyway. Last is "Plate Warmer" which is for warming clean dishes and serving plates and will take about 30 minutes. This feature is also cool, especially if you are serving foods that cool down quickly. But I also don't use this very often because I don't like to waste energy.
INTERNAL FEATURES:
This dishwasher is also built to use Jet Dry. It has a separate opening next to where you put in the dishwashing detergent. If you fill the opening full, that little bit of Jet Dry will last about a month. I highly recommend it- at first I didn't use Jet Dry because I didn't want to give into the gimmick of it all. But, your new washer comes with a sample bottle of Jet Dry, so one day I gave in and tried it. My dishes were absolutely gorgeous! Even the dried on rice bowl! Now I always make sure my dishwasher has Jet Dry in it. BTW- I use Electrasol tabs in this dishwasher.
OVERALL:
This dishwasher has a really nice upper rack that holds your glasses in place well. It is a little bit too close to the top of the dishwasher as I have had some problems fitting in large items such as 32oz. plastic cups. But, if you don't have such things, you will be OK because normal glasses fit fine.
The lower rack is pretty good- it has a nice silverware basket that is removable so you can just take it out and go to your silverware drawer to empty it.
This dishwasher is a little bit loud, but overall it is a great machine and I would highly recommend it. I will definitely buy another GE model when I get another home. I have only had this one since my husband and I bought our new home in October, but it has not given us a moment of trouble and I anticipate it lasting a long time.
