What to Get for Those Pesky College Kids

Dec 11 '00

Here are some handy hints for getting gifts for college kids. While these won't pertain to everyone of course, I think that a lot of these are good ideas. DISCLAIMER: See if the person has some of these things before going out and buying them. Also this is based on the opinion of a college freshman who lives in a dorm.

Money I know, I know. It's not personal but it is ALWAYS welcome! And if you feel that you want it to be a little more personal give it to them in a card with specific instructions on how to spend it. Something like "I wanted to get you an outfit but your fashion senses are far superior to mine, so spend this on some clothes you want." It is like a gift certificate but you don't limit what store it can be spent at.

Gift Cards This is kind of like money, but get gift cards to more practical places. I have heard of gas gift cards, which sounds like a good idea. Anything that is a practical cost like that is a great idea because it frees up money for other things.

Pajama Bottoms This might shock you but many college kids are lazy. That's why these things are great. The bottoms should be of a flannel like material, not the ones that are the same thickness of a bed sheet. What's great about these is you don't have to change on the weekends if you don't want to. You can head over to the dining hall in these if you want to.

Blankets/Throw Pillows I don't know about other places but my dorm room is pretty cold, so an extra blanket could be really used. The pillows also help when other people hang out in your room. Most rooms don't have room for furniture so it is nice to offer people a pillow or something to lean against.

Computer Stuff Maybe I am being presumptuous, but most people have computers where I am. This gift requires a little more effort because you have to know what the student already has. Assuming they have a computer, good ideas can be extra print cartridges, blank CD's if they have a burner (and if you are looking for a big gift you could always get them a CD burner!), or you could even go with computer games.

Hope this helps! I know I could go for some of these. A lot of these are very practical gifts but I think that those are the best ones.
