Are you looking for a new file or web server for your small business?? Trust me, you can't do much better than the Dell PowerEdge 2400.
I currently maintain four of these servers for two different clients. Each uses one for their webserver and one for their fileserver. Each of the servers runs a PIII 600 with 256mb of memory and 4 - 9gb hard drives in a Raid V configuration and each only cost around $6,000. Essentially, that gives you a server with around 29gb or storage space running a drive configuration where each drive backs up each other and even if one of your four drives should go bad, the other three take up the slack and you never have a down time caused by a bad drive. In addition, for that price you get an internal tape backup drive so you can run nightly backups of all your data.
Each 2400 is also highly upgradeable so you won't be stuck with a server that needs to be replaced in a couple of years. The 2400 can support two Pentium III processors and is expandable up to 2 gigabyte of memory! You can have as many as six hard drives that can be as big as 36gb in their native format (not running a Raid configuration). In addition, if you do ever have a problem with a hard drive, you can just open the front cover (without turning the machine off), pop the drive out and pop a new one in. Hotswapable Drives...what will they think of next!
So what sets this server apart from all the others?? It's A Dell! From the minute you order the server, you can track it's progress from the manufacturing line where it is custom built to your specifications all the way to your door. In addition, each Dell has a unique service tag which allows you to pull up information about your specific server on the web and easily download driver or firmware updates.
As for customer service, I have only had to call Dell twice (both regarding firmware updates). Each time I have used my Express Service Code to be directed directly to the group that assists with the PowerEdge 2400s. That's right! A support group at your fingertips who can help with your specific server. No more "Um...let me look that up" or "Hmmm...let me ask my manger"! These people know the 2400's and they are quick to get you the answer you need. In addition, they arent in a big rush to get you off the phone. Both times, the service rep stayed on the phone throughout my firmware upgrade to ensure that it solved the problem.
Need someone to be on-call to maintain the server? Dell offers a Same Day, 4 hour on-site service contract that will ensure that someone will be there to help you if the server goes down. It costs a little extra (around $1200) but it is worth it if you don't have someone there to maintain you server.
If you are looking for a new server for you small business, I highly recommend that you look into a Dell PowerEdge 2400. It is an outstanding product with outstanding service at a price you can't beat!
