Selling Yourself to College =D

Dec 17 '00

I am DONE with college applications!!!!! I finished 7 grueling applications before Thanksgiving! SCORE! It was definitely a relief to ship them off for my counselor to deal with. Now...all I have to deal with is the financial aid applications! aHHhhhhhHH!

WARNING: No slacking allowed when doing college applications! Get them in to your counselor as soon as possible, your chances of getting accepted are greater if they're in earlier. Once you start the process, it won't see so hard at all! Trust me! =)

Most college applications require an essay and a couple shorter essays. The most common questions I encountered when filling out the applications include the following in some form:

--> ** What is the extracurricular/community activity most important to you, and how has it affected you?
--> ** How did you hear about __________ University/College, and what compelled you to apply?
--> ** Why do you think you're a good match for this school?
--> ** What is the area of study you interested in, and what do you think __________ University/College can offer to your major?
--> ** If you could be someone from the past or present (fictional or nonfictional), who would it be, and why?
--> What is your favorite word, and why?

--> Look outside your window, and discuss what you would change about what you see.
--> ** The Board of Admissions would like to know more about you. Please write a brief paragraph describing yourself or please write an essay describing yourself creatively.

** Indicates an actual essay I chose to write!

I think the last prompt about describing yourself is the easiest to answer. It's probably the most common too! The "Tell us about yourself" essay topic allows you to talk about a subject you know everything about, yourself! Remember, even if you're writing an essay about being someone else, always refer back to yourself and how you would like to be this person. In any case, be prepared to test your creativity to the limits with sometimes far-fetched essay topics!

Originality is key for any essay topic. Write candidly, not what you think the admissions officers want. Anecdotes and memories that reveal something about your personality are very good topics for this kind of essay because they are your own experience, and not anyone else's.

Some colleges will also ask you to submit a piece of graded work, usually creative work. So be prepared to make copies of all your English stuff that I'm sure you have saved!!

TIPS:

1. Proofread!!! Have teachers, your friend's smartie sibling, the dog, your parents, the mailman, or anyone you trust proofread your essays!
2. Word-process all your essays when possible!
3. Use Black ink when needed, and try not to white out!

-- I hope that the tips and advice I preach worked! I'll definitely do a follow-up editorial when I find out where I get accepted in the Spring! -- TO BE CONTINUED...
