The time to act is now. Those nefarious lawyers may be on the verge of tramping on another of our rights and freedoms. OK, Ill back up and clarify with an example of a situation that I recently encountered. I bought a DVD movie through the Internet and it arrived with a crack. The seller was not eager to replace it or refund my money. I tried the disk in my DVD player and it played, the crack was not on the recorded side, but with any handling might very well be. The logical alternative was to make a copy. Now we all know that DVD movies are copy protected, probably by the Contents Scramble System (CSS). I tried to copy it with a top rated piece of DVD burning software. The process told me that the disk was copied correctly, but unfortunately for me it would not play in any DVD player that I had access to. Seems that CSS works. Then I found out about 321 Studios DVD X Copy. I tried it and lo and behold it worked! Salvation at last.
Now comes the legalistic debate. Of course, the Hollywood moguls dont like this. They would much rather force you to buy another copy than to allow you to make a backup, which any experienced computer user knows is the first commandment for retaining your data, Thou shalt backup.
321 Studios has gone to great lengths to ensure that there product is not used for piracy. They put controls into the DVD copies that prevent more than one copy being made at a time and that copies cannot be copied. This will effectively keep one from economically producing pirated copies for resale. However, I believe that it is ones inherent right to protect ones self from subsequent damage of a relatively delicate product that they have bought and paid for.
The method that is used to copy a protected disk, does not break the CSS scheme, but allows the machine to proceed beyond the CSS decryption before starting the burning process. The argument is that this method does not break the copy control mechanism, but merely allows purchasers to make a personal backup. I leave the resolution to the courts, but urge anyone who feels they have the need for this capability to get it now, before the avaricious ones might just win in court.
DVD X copy works with all DVD write able formats: I used it on a Sony DRU-120 DVD+RW burner running under Windows XP Professional and was able to produce a copy of a movie in about 35 minutes. I have since made about 5 other copies of DVD movies that I had bought and all burned without a fault and played on several different DVD players. However, I found that they would not play on a Chinese manufactured 7-inch portable DVD player, although the original would. This is quite likely the fault of the player, rather than DVD X Copy. The version that I had was for Windows XP only, but I believe there are other versions available for Windows 98 and Me.
The copies also contain all the added DVD special features, so nothing is lost.
One of the movies was recorded on both sides, so it took 2 disks to copy it all. DVD X Copy let me know just how many recordable disks were required and suggested a break point that was exactly correct.
There is also a tutorial that will show you precisely how to make a copy, just in case you have questions about the highly intuitive format.
DVD X Copy retails for just under $100 and should be available at most computer stores.
The bottom line is, time may be running out on your ability to buy this extremely useful and very capable program. Dont delay, get it done!
