| foster201's Full Review: George Foreman GR82B Indoor Grill |
After watching the Ronco info-mercial several times I convinced myself that I must get a rotisserie machine, as I am a kitchen gadget addict. I must also thank all those who wrote reviews since you really helped me to decide which one to purchase. I am really glad I purchased the George Foreman model, because it came with all the accessories one could need, unlike the Ronco which requires several extra purchases to get everything (that's where they get ya plus the 60 bucks for S & H. Yes 60 bucks!).
So far I have cooked patties for patty melts, baby back ribs, and a 10 lb turkey, barely though as I needed twine to tie it up enough to keep it from scraping the heating element, (I have no idea how some of you managed to get a 13 lb turkey cooked). After reading all the reviews I did try a few tips and thought of a few myself.
1) The one big complaint I seemed to notice was the clean-up of the drip pan and the reflector. I used water in the drip pan to prevent the drippings from cooking onto the pan which made clean up easy. I noticed that some used foil to line it, but this can reflect to much heat and cause for over-cooking especially of red meats, so as I noticed in some reviews, if you have had an over cooking of steaks or ribs then just use water or spray the drip pan with some Pam.
2) I did however decide to use the foil (shiny side out) on the reflector this prevented any splatters and after a weekend of cooking the reflector looks brand new and the foil did not seam to interfere at all. So line your reflector instead of the drip pan.
3) I discovered that if you are doing ribs attach half, 3, of the skewers then wrap the ribs around followed by placing the remaining 3 skewers on. This gives you 3 under for support and 3 over the ribs to hold them on.
Side note on the skewers since I did notice that several people had problems getting them on. I did as well at first, till I realized that for easy attachment place the point in the small whole, then slide the other end in flush, don't try to squeeze and force the end into the slot, just slide it through with a little squeeze (so insert from the inside, side not from top) They go on with a breeze and stay on!
The machine is GREAT! and all who tasted the results were very impressed! The ribs were even compared to Tony Roma's (Note: use a good rub and wait till the last 5 mins to baste with BBQ sauce, then after you take them out use a little coating of honey) The turkey turned a beautiful golden brown and the skin was crisp and delicious, in fact one person who said she never eats the skin cause she hates it said it was fabulous and had a second piece. I timed the turkey for 2 1/2 hours and noticed it looked quite done but the pop out timer was still in so I used a meat thermometer to check at found it to be between 180 and 190 degrees inside and before I could get the thermometer back in the drawer the pop up timer released, so in case your wondering yes pop up timers still work in rotisseries.
I would highly recommend this appliance or the larger unit, I can't imagine trying to use the baby model, the Jr. is just barely large enough. The machine is also great entertainment as I found myself looking in and watching the bubbling, browning and steamy sighs as the food turned, quite hypnotic! My guest also seemed to enjoy it, in fact it gave the playoffs (football) a run for their money, as there seemed to be someone in front of it almost all the time. I will also say it was great to be able to cook a turkey and still have the oven free for rolls, green beans etc... for a change there was no oven juggling which always seems to happen. Once again the machine is GREAT, very very quite, well made, easy to use and clean, and really cooks I already got next weekend's menu planned and it will be another rotisserie fiesta.
