| blacksheep's Full Review: Dell Latitude C840RT Mobile P4-M 1.6GHz / 20GB / 2... |
I had to buy this model as part of a certification program I'm currently in. I can't say whether it worked perfectly "out of the box" (software was installed by my program before I received it), but I can assume it did.
My last laptop was a Sony VAIO PCG-F650, which I was happy with in regards to its function for me, which was mainly word processing. However, I was unable to work smoothly between programs like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Flash, I had to open them one at a time for maximum performance.
Such is not the case with this new Dell. It never slows down when I abuse it by opening nearly every program at once. It feels incredibly fast.
Let's see... it's also been wonderful for wireless internet use as well as with an ethernet cable...no need to carry around a "dongle" and plug into your card slot - plug the cable straight into your computer (there's a spot for a phone cable as well).
CDs burn quickly, interchangeable ZIP disk works well. I use the infared to transfer information to my PDA and other laptops. Battery life is great, and indicator is accurate.
Complaints: I have to carry this for my almost-an-hour-total walk to class every day, so it's heavy weight took a little getting used to. The case it comes in is also heavy, I opted for a case logic neoprene protector and a normal backpack. The laptop is also a bit bulky and boxy, but I'd rather have it feel like this than extremely fragile since it has to take quite a bit of wear and tear.
The last problem is that the DELL logo on the back of the screen actually presses into the display and creates a faded spot. The 16 people in my class all have the same problem. It's not very visible, and I'm not sure if it will get worse with time. DELL is known for their great customer service, though, and they've already replaced one screen in our class. I'm sure they'll fix this problem in the future.
