Choosing a Veterinarian for a Sick Dog

Jan 23 '01

The Bottom Line When choosing a Veterinarian, check their credientials and make sure they will listen to you and keep you informed of any and all problems.

We have an 18 month old Chocolate Laborador Retriever named Morgan who lives in our home and is the love of our life. My children have grown up and left home and now Morgan is our child who gets all of our love and attention. He weighs about 70 pounds and is very playful and affectionate. We discovered about 4 months ago that he had epilepsy resulting in grand mal seizures which leave him temporarialy blind. These seizures started out just one every two to three weeks but have recently escalated into clusters of seizures, about 5 0r 6 in a row. During most of these seizures he is unable to control his bodily functions and we are usually cleaning the carpet and linoleum for a while afterwards. Not only are these seizures hard for us to handle but they are taking their toll on poor Morgan.

We love our best friend dearly and have shed many tears over his illness. We have a great Veterinarian that has taken care of Morgan since we got him at 6 weeks of age. He has Morgan on medication that we have recently had to increase because the seizures are getting worse. We don't know how much of this we or Morgan can take. Morgan's doctor keeps a record of every seizure he has and what is happening in his surroundings when he has them.

We have learned that it is very important to have a good relationship with you dog's doctor especially if you have a sick dog. We had to take Morgan to an after hours emergency clinic one weekend and they were worthless in respect to emergency care for a dog having seizures. With our regular doctor, one phone call and they are ready to handle the seizures when we arrive because they know what medication he is taking, the dosage and when he had his last seizure, all the vital information.

Also remember to help your Veterinarian as much as possible to treat your dog when he's ill. We make sure to note any and all seizures as well as what may be happening at that time, such as thunder storms, loud noise, even just watching TV. We then report these instances immediately to the doctor so that he can make informed decisions about Morgan. Then we make sure to follow any and all instructions the doctor gives us for our best friend.
