| levyrob's Full Review: Philips MC-50 |
The Philips MC50 was exactly the type of small bookshelf stereo I was looking for to use in the bedroom. I typically listen to very quiet ambient music at night, and liked that the unit holds 3 CDs (so I can load up several CDs and hear something different without having to change them every day). As well, the unit shuts off automatically 30 minutes after the CD finishes if no buttons are pushed --so it isn't on all night after you fall asleep.
However, the unit soon revealed it's biggest flaw: noisy operation. After 36 days, the first unit I purchased started making a disturbing whirring/grinding noise after being on for 20 minutes, even when not playing a CD. The noise was louder than the music I listen to (which is only the first or second setting above mute), so was quite startling (it almost sounded like a computer power supply). I returned the unit to the store, but since it was outside the 30-day window (just barely), I was forced to get an exchange and purchase an extended "warranty". Unfortunately, the replacement unit also exhibits the same problem.
At this point, I will probably put this stereo in another room and put my older, larger Aiwa unit back in the bedroom.
The CD controls on the unit are not very intuitive when you're not using the remote. For example, the unit tries to read all 3 CDs first before letting you play one. Even then, it isn't easy to use the front panel buttons to get a CD to play (at least compared to the Aiwa -- where you can open the tray, push one button, tray closes and selected CD plays all without touching the remote). The MC-50 will let you change a disk while one is playing.
Certainly, the MC50 does have some nice features. The sound is nice, the unit is small enough to fit on most shelves, the remote control is fully featured (though could stand to be lighted), and the price is fairly reasonable.
I would recommend this unit for a living room, family room, office, or kitchen where you wanted 3 CD and cassette capability but were not concerned with quiet operation.
