The Bottom Line As far as online computer shopping goes, Compaq's Online Store proved to be the easiest to use. If you want a Compaq, give the site a try. You'll like it.

I bought a Compaq 5000 series through the website last week and have yet to receive it. But the buying experience was good. It was reasonably simple to link to the "build your own presario" part of the site. There is also an option to view what they already have out in stores, and what the prices are on these versions.
As for the build your own part, this is what I did so this is what I'll review. I think its a great idea, what I made is probably the same thing that is sitting in a store somewhere but I feel that I alone am responsible for this piece of machinery coming together, and since I would have no idea how to actually build one, this is the closest I will come to making my own anything. :)
You get to choose what processor you want, at what speed, and you can pick from a home or office version of Microsoft products. After you decide that, you are taken to the next page where you get to choose what other options you want. This is great because you see the price of what you are ordering on the side of the screen, and it updates with each option you choose. This was my favorite thing.
If you have an idea of what you want, the Compaq site is the way to go. If you know how much RAM you need and how many GB you want your hard drive to be, then you'll be ok. There is a faq on the site but if you aren't sure what you need or want I would suggest calling them or going to a store that sells Compaq.
