| kamel622's Full Review: Knocked Up |
One of the great things about being on vacation is going to an afternoon matinee during the week. Not something I get to do very often since Im usually taking care of 3 5 children everyday.
Today my husband and I grabbed a few munchies and headed to our local movie theater, plunked down $12.00, got comfy in theater 4 of 7 theaters and with four other people prepared to enjoy Knocked Up. I love small town living, where else can you leave your home 30 minutes before a movie starts, stop at the store, drive to the theater, buy your sodas and be in your seats before the previews begin?
The only thing I really knew about the movie was that Katherine Heigl was in it. I love her as Izzie on Greys Anatomy so decided to just go with it and see how she performed on the big screen. Checking her credits she has been in many movies, but I dont remember seeing anything aside from Greys with her.
Alison (Heigl) Scott works for E Entertainment and is thrilled when she is promoted from behind the camera to in front of it. In the early scenes of the film we see Ryan Seacrest, as himself, finishing up an interview. Alison has to calm him as he is waiting for his next interview to arrive. It is a short scene but a fun spotlight on a different view of the American Idol emcee.
Going out to celebrate with her sister Debbie (Leslie Mann) the two get into the nightclub on their good looks and decide to have a fun night of celebration until Debbies husband Pete (Paul Rudd) calls to say that one of their children may have chicken pox. Debbie goes home and Alison stays to party a bit with Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) a curly haired guy she met at the bar while trying to get a beer. The two dance and chat and eventually end up back at her place, never knowing that their one night stand would turn in to so much more.
Eight weeks later Alison realizes that it isnt the flu she has but rather that she is pregnant and contacts Ben to let him know hes going to be a dad.
Ben is an unemployed, pot smoking, web site designer who hopes to make his way in the world by designing a web site that allows users to find out where they can see nudity in different movies, which stars bare it all and how far in to the movie it is before that happens. With his friends Jason, Jay, Jonah and Martin (Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill and Martin Starr) he spends his time smoking, joking and movie watching. Having won a lawsuit years before for the fantastic amount of $14,000 he hasnt worked and figures his final $900 will see him through another two years.
The movie is about relationships, family and finding love in places where you would never imagine it being. The majority of the film is about the pregnancy and learning to give and take in order to support one another. There are of course quite a few bumps in road along the way, but the happy ending after the birth is what I rooted for through out the movie.
I went in to viewing this film having no expectations and was pleased as I watched it for the 132 minute running time that I was taken away from my everyday life and charmed by the wonderful acting of Heigl and Rogen. Both did a great job of convincing me that they were their characters. I was concerned that I might only be able to see Izzie, but found Heigl totally believable as Alison.
I knew that Seth Rogen looked familiar as well, but couldnt place him. While he has been in many different television programs where I knew him from was as Cal in the movie 40 Year Old Virgin. He has four new films either complete or finishing up so we will be seeing a lot of this slightly chunky film star.
This isnt a film full of deep thoughts and unknown outcome but rather a romantic comedy / drama that is a great way to be entertained for a few hours.
One con that some may have with this film is the amount of times the F bomb is dropped. At times it seemed gratuitous but I think it was partly used to show what slackers Ben and his friends were. The language in this film and some frontal nudity along with drug use makes it a film for the over 17 crowd and gives it its R rating.
This film was written and directed by Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin). Filming was done in Santa Monica California, so I was keeping an eye out for any familiar sites there.
I was pleasantly surprised by this film and recommend it anyone wanting to see a feel good romantic comedy, but as I said be prepared for some language.
