Are we twins? I am cracking up here. I have just ordered this:
Roof Gardens: History, Design, and Construction
by Theodore H. Osmundson
I have been fascinated with green roofs for a while now, and I read everything I can find about them. We really do seem to be living parallel lives at times, though.

Hey, I just had a thought about a rooftop garden in the mountains. (You're probably right about the sun.) If you grew lettuce and some short vegys, you could avoid some deer problems unless they can climb up on your roof. If you kept it watered it might also create a fire barrier, possibly better than metal roofs. Some interesting thoughts. Good luck.

even though I have lots of land -- the roof would get more sun here in the mountains

It's a long way to Michigan, at least 9 hours-in early March. Yikes. You going?
Green Roofs are popping up everywhere. Didn't they have a strong hold on places in Kansas, Nebraska and parts of Iowa (sod roofs which kind of sprouted). Now we're a little more sophisticated about them, but in some ways they still serve similar needs.
Hi there again.

Even in Iowa...

( 'The green roof' under Overviews, links at right... )
While it is only a grass/sedum roof, the concept has even reached Iowa.
Any thoughts of traveling to Michigan in March, you 'Central Illinois' denizen..??
...tom...
P.S. Perhaps your travel budget was blown on sending your dog on a ski trip..?? ...tom...

Parts of it. The author shows a picture of a similar project, The Eden Project, in Cornwall, England, which features green roofs.

I have always loved this concept!
I think that is how the idea for the Biosphere started, I believe it was a rooftop greenhouse.

The entire concept of doing this is amazing. I hope this effort continues. It makes sense.

A fascinating topic... (Reply to this comment)

and a very attractive option for rooftops! Our friend's house in Norway has grass on top... when they told me about it, I said, send a photo... and they did, and behold, it's a grassy rooftop... they said it's for insulation! Interesting.
I really enjoyed this review.
