Pros: Perfect for my needs, twice as fast as some other NAS's.
Cons: User setups are a bit goofy, but not insurmountable.
The Bottom Line: Perfect for my needs, I would buy another one if ever needed. FAR better than the Hawking

I had a Hawking HNAS-1 which has many of the features of the DSM-G600. The Hawking is slower than a dog and was worthless for large files. I bought the DSM-G600 to replace it. As a test of the speed, I did a copy of about 10 GB of files from the Hawking to my internal HD. It took about 45 minutes! I pulled the drive from the Hawking (it too is just an enclosure...you add your own drive) and put it into the DSM-G600. Even though it was already formatted EXT3, the DSM wanted to re-format it. It took about 10 minutes to do the format (200GB drive). I then went through the wizard and set the DSM up very quickly. I use a static IP address, but it also easily picked up a DHCP IP address. Everything worked flawlessly. I then copied the files back onto the DSM that I had copied off the Hawking. It took 22 minutes. That's right....the DSM was twice as fast writing than the Hawking was reading! No...it wasn't due to reading or writing to the internal drive. That drive is an WD Raptor (10,000rpm SATA drive) that is the fastest drive you can buy for a PC and beats the pants off any NAS.
I monitored the network usage. My PC and the switch it and the DSM are attached to are Gigabit. The Hawking was only 10/100 Megabit. Network usage showed 5% usage of the bandwidth with the DSM. That translates into 50 Megabit (5 Megabyte) per second thruput. Using the Hawking, the usage was exactly 1/2 of that...2.4%.
No, it won't use the full Gigabit...the drive isn't that fast nor is the interface hardware.
Is it the fastest NAS on the market? No. Is it the least expensive NAS on the market? No. Is it the most expensive NAS on the market? Again..NO. It is a very good compromise and perfectly suitable for my needs (backups) and with their 1.01 firmware (on D-Link's site) the 2GB limitation is gone.
Added 9/27/2006 -----------
I've now run several backups with the resultant file sizes running from a bit over 1 GB to well over 10 GB and NO issues at all.
I am completely satisfied with this unit.

As to complaints about attached USB drives not allowing NTFS in a read/write mode. That's normal. The attached USB drives are attached to a LINUX box (the DSM) not a Windows box.
by the way...did I say, the DSM is a lot quieter than the Hawking was?
At the time I'm writing this...CompUSA is selling them for $100 ($99.98 to be exact) as a "Manager's Special".
I don't use the Wireless or the FTP server so no comments on them.
