| popsrocks's Full Review: Roy Rogers |
I wonder how many kids, under the age 30 would know who Roy Rogers was? I believe that lack of knowledge may be why their chain has to work even harder as they continue to blast their way back into the fast food market.
I remember seeing many more Roy Rogers food places around years ago. I was disappointed when they started disappearing. There is just one on all Long Island right now. I'm more apt to find one when driving up to Maine on the interstates at the fast food stops. That's where I found my last Roy Rogers Roast Beef sandwiches. Man I love those things! I am also happy to hear that Roy Rogers is making a comeback offering many new franchises. Come to Long Island!!
Who Is Roy Rogers
For those who don't know Roy Rogers was one of the singing cowboys that had a very popular action/adventure western TV show with his wife Dale Evans. I watched him often as a kid in the 1950's.
Besides being entertainers Roy and his wife were strong and good Christians who never put down others but always stressed a good fair and clean life style. Roy, though now long gone, still has a kids club and these are his rules as taken from the Roy Roger's Official site, not the restaurant site.
Roy Rogers Riders Club Rules:
1. Be neat and clean.
2. Be courteous and polite.
3. Always obey your parents.
4. Protect the weak and help them.
5. Be brave but never take chances.
6. Study hard and learn all you can.
7. Be kind to animals and take care of them.
8. Eat all your food and never waste any.
9. Love God and go to Sunday school regularly.
10. Always respect our flag and our country.
Now the franchise, though using his name, does not go out of its way to stress these rules or the Roy Roger's legacy from what I see, but it does serve some really good quality fresh foods and that was keeping with Roy's wholesome American attitude stressing good quality and stick to the ribs home cookin'. In checking out their site I see RRs is also franchising in Australia, Brazil, Canada (Alberta and Ontario only), China, France, Indonesia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Romania, Russia, South Korea, and Spain. This new initiative according to the Roy Roger's Restaurant web site started up in 2003 and is presented as "Roy Rogers Rides Again!" I am happy to see that.
Three Point Menu
Roy Roger's Restaurants have always had a good selection of foods including the Roast Beef sandwich I always enjoyed. It's good tasting, real roast beef. They also have good hamburgers. The Double R Bar Burger was and still is my favorite, that is after going to the Fixin's Bar that is a staple of Roy Roger's Restaurants. They have a mix of dressings and toppings to put on the burgers and sandwiches. I also love the horse-radish sauce to put on your orders.
Though I like legs, thighs and breasts, I'm not too much of a chicken man. I can't take myself away from the beef when in the place. They do have many selections of fried chicken, chicken tenders and grilled sandwiches.
All the offerings can be purchased as a combo with a side and drink. The sides offer much more than McDonald's or Burger King. You can get the usual french fries but also have a choice of baked and mashed potatoes, fresh fruit cup, cole slaw, baked apples, tossed salad or baked beans.
They serve Coke products and lemonade, iced tea. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Minute Maid OJ and Dannon Water are also available.
Summing It Up
Though I don't get to the full service stand alone restaurants much any longer, I do look for Roy Rogers in on my way up and down from Maine. It's my absolute favorite of the fast food places. The food is a step above the rest. I like the freshness of the food, quick service, and the friendly smiles of the workers. I just hope that Roy will be back on Long Island at a place a bit closer where I can saddle up and get to.
Being a bit nostalgic now, I'll finish with the same song that Roy closed his TV shows with.
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.
Happy trails to you, 'till we meet again.
Ah yes, life is good...and so is a thick Roy Rogers Roast Beef Sandwiches with a side of Mashed potatoes. Mmm, good cookin'!
