What is Anime? Anime is a type of animated cartoon from Japan. However it is very different from the Looney Toon type cartoon that we have over here.
First thing is anime type cartoons last a half-hour long and not in 6 minute shorts like a lot of cartoons we have over here. On top of that Anime cartoon stories may take several episodes to conclude, sometimes an entire series is done over one huge story line. This gives a chance for the story, the characters and the plot to be more complex and more rounded because it’s all one big story, instead of just a bunch of small and unrelated stories.
What’s with the big eyes.
The biggest thing about anime is that they have big huge eyes that take up half there face. They’re done that way for a reason and it isn’t to make them look goofy. They’re done like that so the characters can show more emotion, without going into bizarre outakes like American cartoons. This doesn’t mean they can’t or they won’t it just means that the characters can explore a whole range of emotions, without much effort or time.
OK what’s with the falling down and the large sweat drops.
Well the sweat drops our an easy one, large sweat drops on the head means there nervous. Falling down is done in cases of confusion, usually done when another character says something off the wall or totally idiotic.
Is there any other difference.
Yes there are animes that are made for the adult and teenage crowd that go into things that most American cartoons don’t. The biggest one that should be noted is character deaths, that’s right both good guy and bad guy characters can die in anime cartoons. In other words take for example Daffy Duck getting shot in the head, in American cartoon Daffy’s beak falls off and he puts it back on so he can get shot again. In anime cartoon Daffy’s head get blown off, and Daffy is never seen again except in flash back sequences.
What are some good anime cartoon series.
Here are a couple good anime cartoon series.
Pokemon.
Everybody has heard of this one. The story follows the adventures of Pokemon trainer Ash and his pet Pikachu. Ash also travels along with his friends Brock and Misty. This action in this cartoon is kid friendly with nobody getting killed in their Pokemon battles. There is also a great deal of humor that makes this a great cartoon to watch.
Dragonball Z
Dragonball Z follows that of the original Dragonball series (now being showed on cartoon networks toonami has well). It continues the story of the super sayien Goku has he fights to protect earth and the dragonballs. While Dragonball focus more on adventure’s and quest, DBZ continues more on action packed super human fights the Z fighters and whatever menace that wants to destroy earth.
Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe
Tenchi is stuck in a nightmare, he’s got 5 beautiful women living with them. The only problem is that there all have super powers, and they all like to fight over who gets Tenchi’s affection. This usually leaves Tenchi very bruised by the end of the day. Thinks get more confusing when Tenchi finds out that is Grandfather is an alien from another planet, which gives Tenchi a few superpowers of his own to wield. And he’ll need all the help he can get, between Princess Ayeka’s and the space Pirate Ryoko’s fighting, Little Washus mad inventions, Mioshi’s clumsiness, and anyother space villian that decides to come calling on Tenchi’s door step. .
Gundam wing.
What every major cartoon should have a story of peace, war, and giant machines that blow sh!t up. The space colony’s are concern about the take over of earth the earth sphere alliance by the evil OZ organization. So they send the Gundams to destroy OZ before that happens. When the Gundam pilots screw up and accidentally destroy the alliance pacifist leaders, Oz manages to take over the earth. Now it’s up to the Gundams to keep the Space Colony’s and the earth from destroying each other.
MS Gundam.
Not to be confused with Gundam this was the original series. There is nothing in common between the two story'’ that happen in MS Gundam, and that in Gundam wing. The earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon have started a major war, the war has destroyed space colony’s and even change the climate of earth. The only hope for the earth federation is the young Pilot Amruro Ray and the power of the Gundam. Amruro’s powers don’t come with just the Gundam, Amururo is a new type with amazing jedi like powers and amazing reflexes. While Gundam wing try’s to focus on two or three adventures at a time, with each Gundam pilot going in his own way. The original Gundam mainly focus on Armuro and his friends. While the series is good I can’t tell you how it ends because the b@stards at cartoon network pulled it off it’s line up about 5 episodes before it was completed.
Voltron.
All right Voltron is one of the first Anime cartoons I saw, back when it was on Cartoon Networks Toonami. While Voltron is a bit corny and the story does seem to be a bit power rangers, it’s still a great cartoon. King Zarkon is planing on taking over the entire Galaxy but before he can do that he plans on conquering planet Ares. Unfortunately for Zarkon, Ares has 5 mighty lions and when they form together they can make the giant robot Voltron. With Voltron power they always manage to send Zarkons robots to the scrap metal heap.
Bad Animes.
Animes aren’t perfect, and it dosen’t help that in dubbing in to English that at least one thing gets screwed up. Here are a few animes that are on the bad list, I still recommend watching them once, but only to get a laugh at how bad they are.
From bad to least bad here they are.
Tenchi in Tokyo.
I had high hopes for this one. After all it does have a story line that works in theory. Tenchi moves out of his house in the country and moves to Tokyo, leaving the girls behind. Tenchi also finds a girlfriend in the city named Sakuya. Meanwhile there is an evil villain named Yugi who plans on splitting up Tenchi and his family and Sakuya is in the plans more ways then one. Now what ruins the show is that Yugi motive is never really explain, the animation is sub par, and then at the ending where we actually see the fight against Yugi it winds up has a rerun of the old 1970 superfriends with Tenchi defeating her with a hug.
Card Captors.
Not to be confused with the Japanese version which I never seen Card Captor Sakura. Card Captors is a mess, it seems that kids wb wanted to see how badly they could screw up an anime. Not only is the dubbing done badly, the story line makes no sense, because Kids WB decided to jump around in the dubbing. They jump forwards and backwards and sideways. Leaving the story line jumbled and constantly confused. I put this one up higher then Tenchi in Tokyo because at least with the new season the story line makes sense. What’s the story line supposed to be, a 10 year old girl named Sakura accidentally opens the clow book and sets free the clow cards. Now each Clow Card has a magic spirit in that is cable of great destruction. Now it’s up to her, or sidekick and rival Li, and the guardian beast of the Clow Kero to get them all back.
Speed Racer.
Now I actaully like Speed Racer, it’s a good cartoon however from a technical aspect it’s got to be the worse dub. With bad animation and even worse voices speed racer is defintley a b rated cartoon. I still recommend watching because it is enjoyable to watch even with the bad dubb.
08 MS Team.
Out of the three gundam shows I seen this has been the most disapointing. The problem isn’t that it’s bad, the fact that they try to cram so much into a short 11 episode mini series. When federation pilot Sherio Falls in love with Zeon Pilot Ina he starts to loose the trust in the team he commands. Of course Ina and Sherio love profailes and they both stop a band of Federation and Zeon from completely destroying themselves in the end. The thing is that the story so short that they try to make you believe that Shrio and Ina fall in love with each other after they spend 5 minutes together. On top of that there is not enough spent on the rest of Shrio’s crew that make them feel betrayed. In the end the whole story makes you feel kind of empty, of course my feelings may be different if Cartoon Network ever gets around to airing the final episode in the series.
Movies.
Is there any anime movies. Yes tons and there are several popular ones that I have not seen like Akira for example but hear are a few that I have seen and can recommend.
Kiki’s delivery service.
This is probably one of the best anime movies for the kiddies. The movie follows the story of a Young Witch named Kiki has she sets out in life and tries to run a business. She quickly finds out even with magic life is not always easy or fair, especially after she looses her magical powers. With great animation and a great dubb this one you shouldn’t miss
Princess Monoke.
This one is for the adult crowd. When Prince A$h!taka gets cursed while defending his village from a demon he sets out for a cure. His quest leads him to iron town where he gets caught up between Lady Eboshi and the citizens of Iron town and the gods of the forest lead by Princess Monoke.
Gundam Wing Endless Waltz.
Now every Gundam fan has saw Gundam Wing Endless Waltz on cartoon network. The movie follows one year after the war that happen in Gundam Wing. The Gundam pilots have sent there gundams to be destroyed when a new enemy appears in Marmaia Barton who plans to take over the earth. While Gundam Pilot Quatre tries to get the gundams back, it’s up to pilots Herro and Duo to delay the take over until Quatre comes back with the gundams. This is a good one for the Gundam fans but I won’t recommend it to the fans who haven’t watch the series yet or else they will get confused.
Pokemon the movie 2000.
I had to end with a Pokemon movie, and it’s a real toss up between Pokemon 3 and 2000, I have decided to put in 2000. Out of all the Pokemon movies 2000 comes the closet and getting the witt and humor that is found in the series. In this one Ash has to save the world from an evil collector who plans on capturing the legendary Lugia. To do this he has to capture the 3 legendary bird Pokemon that inhabit the orange island. The problem with this is that the birds control the weather and with each one being captured the whether gets out of control. In order to return balance Ash has to find 3 magic balls and return them to Shamuti Island before time runs out.
