I JUST GOTTA DO SOMETHING! ANYTHING!

Sep 14 '01

The Bottom Line Be proud to be an American, and let it show, let everyone know.

The lines for waiting to give blood extend for hours down the street, and my blood type is not one they are asking for right now. I have given money to the fund, but I cannot give much as I just do not have much money to give. I wish I could run down there to New York and help dig, I want to work. I feel so helpless.

That is how I have been feeling as I watch the news. Saddened, angry and needing to do something, anything.

Tonight, after a long day of prayer and mourning, my family took to the streets. Candles in one hand, flags in another. We walked the streets and we sang. We sang God Bless America, Oh Beautiful, My Country Tis of thee, Yankee Doodle, You're a Grand Old Flag, and The Stars Spangled Banner.

As we walked and sang, friends and neighbors joined in. Holding candles and singing along. Cars stopped as they drove by and hooted their horns. People stuck their heads out their living room windows, and came and stood in their front doors. And they sang. Our voices sang together in peace and patriotism for our country and we found an inner strength together. We felt so good as we walked the neighborhood that we decided that we should do it again on Sunday night. A renewal to see if we could get even more followers.

Even though I didn't manage to give blood yet, I know I will, and I am not able to send much money, I can pray and I can organize a candle light vigil that will help others to feel better. As we walked with our candles, singing, we began to smile again. The sense of patriotism that I never really felt before has risen in me, and as I felt it rise in me, I knew it rose in the people walking along beside me.

I felt pride for my daughter as she led the group in patriotic songs, and shouted to people as they watched from their windows, asking them to pray for the victims of this terrible tragedy. Then she added, "Please pray for everyone in the world."

It is times like these, when we feel so helpless, when donations of money, and giving blood just does not seem enough, that we need to reach out to our friends and neighbors and join hands and hearts. Look for your patriotic pride, and hang up your flag. Light your candles and take to your street. It will make you feel so much better. I know how great it felt and on Sunday we are doing it again...won't you join us?
