Extremely energetic show; hard to top

Aug 09 '01

The Bottom Line Green Day puts on an amazingly energetic crowd-pleasing show.

Green Day's power-pop-punk music is so little of the Green Day experience once you have seen them live. Billie Joe Armstrong puts on an amazing show complete with guest players, water guns, and a neat set. At my first Green Day concert on June 24th 2001 at AU in DC, The Living End burst onto the stage and prepared the crowd for the loud sound of a concert. They riled the crowd up for about 45 minutes, talking as little as possible and handed the set off to Green Day.

The Lights went off for a little while and then some red sirens started to flash and the opening drums beats of "Nice Guys Finish Last" appeared out of nowhere. The stage soon became lit up to reveal a giant curtain saying "Green Day" and the band playing their opening number. Now, the crowd started moshing very harshly.

After the opening number, Billie stopped to talk while the rest of the band members continued to play.

After about 5 more songs including "Church On Sunday", "Castaway", "Hitchin' A Ride", "Longview", and "Welcome To Paradise", Billie Joe announced that the set for part 1 was over, and they'd be taking requests. Request songs included "Christie Road", "Disappearing Boy" and "At The Library". To each, the band played perfectly, stopping to talk a bit between each.

When request time was over, the band played a few more songs like "She", "When I Come Around", etc and then "Knowledge". "Knowledge" is a cover song by Op I.V. and Billie Joe proceded to invite audience members up onto the stage and let them play the songs on his instruments while he sang. Soon enough, Billie Joe encored for the first time playing an electric solo version of "Time of Your Life" under a purple light. The concert went on ith such hits as Basket Case (after which Billie Joe took a squirt gun and blasted the crowd), "Waiting", and Brain Stew/Jaded (A surprise song, where he started playing it while playing the "hey-oh" game with the crowd). Then, they played "Platypus", a loud song with terribly incoherent lyrics. They then proceded to trash the set, with Tre breaking his drums, Mike smashing his bass, and Billie Joe clinging on to his guita, it being the famous "Blue".

Now the band played mostly acoustic songs not neating too much drumming, etc; like "Warning" and more ntil the closing song, "Macy's Day Parade". In the middle of the last song, Billie Joe pointed to the crowd and said the words "Thank You" what must have been at least 200 times, literally.

Other songs played included "Minority" and "2000 Light Years Away". The way I have described the set list is not totally accurate, just a general feeling for the way things go. These songs that I left out were simply ones that I forgot where they went.

The main idea, though is that, Green Day fan, Green Day hater, you'd love the show. There's tons of crowd interactions, etcetera, and the show is just more energy than you could imagine
