To code or not to code
Jul 25 '01
The Bottom Line Look for the features you need, a radio that is comfortable to hold and use, and buy the least expensive one.
One of the features promoted with FRS radios are the use of the 38 subcodes. Think of the codes as running from 0 (or off) to 38. Anyone who is on code 0 (or without subcode capability) will hear all the conversations on any of the other 38 subcodes on the same channel. When you are using a particular subcode, you won't hear any conversations, unless someone else is also transmitting on that same subcode. They (code 0) can hear you, but you can't hear them. Keep in mind that some radios have more than 38 subcodes, and not all subcodes are on the same frequencies. Different manufacturers may have to be set to different subcodes to communicate.
Keypad locks are nice. They keep you from accidentally changing the channel while you are talking. Roger confirmation beeps let you know when the other party has stopped talking. Some models let you prevent transmissions while receiving a signal.
Otherwise, choose a model that feels good in your hands. Motos are notorious for having the push to talk button on the front of the radio, which is very uncomfortable to me. I prefer the button to be on the side of the radio.
