Now That's What I Call a Close Encounter

Jul 18 '01 (Updated Jan 24 '05)

The Bottom Line For your viewing pleasure, screaming and jumping.

I like a good freaky alien flick! Although I haven't seen one in awhile, there are some good alien films out there. My favorite by far is an old John Carpenter movie made in 1982, called The Thing. It was ahead of it's time. It still freaks me out! I also enjoy watching the old television series, Star Trek In many ways Star Trek, started the avalanche of alien movies to come. Battle Star Galactic followed Star Trek. Then the awesome Star Trek Movies! The Legend Star Wars hit the theaters. I lost track after that. Now there are alien movies everywhere. Also some good television shows! I like to watch, Classic Star Trek, New Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, X Files, Babylon 5 and Stargate.Without further a due here is my top Alien flicks...
(I do not give away any plots)

1.The Thing(1982)

Directed by John Carpenter.
Kurt Russell as MacReady.
Wilford Brimley as Blair.
This movie really freaked me out when I first seen it! If you scare easy or can't stand blood, guts and gore DO NOT watch this one. It is set an the arctic. There are several researchers, a cook, a pilot and a security officer. A manned arctic research outpost(around 10 people).
They unknowingly let loose a alien organism. This Thing has the ability to mutate into what ever it comes in contact with. In this small arctic compound there is just the 10 people, some dogs and the Thing. The trick is to figure out who is who :) This is my favorite alien movie by far!

Quotes from the Movie,

Clark, "I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and p*ssed off whatever it is."

Norris' head sprouts legs and runs under a desk.
Palmer, "You gotta be f*cking kidding me."

2.Alien (1979)

Directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, also rated in my top 10 movies ever).
Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas.
Sigourney Weaver as Lieutenant Ripley.

22 years and still has people jumping! The special effects even grossed me out (that's doing something)
A full crew on the spaceship Nostromo. They pick a an SOS from a downed spaceship. They unknowingly pick up an alien.
This thing flat out goes postal on everything! The Ultimate Killing machine! Flesh like steel & blood like sulfuric acid. Will anyone survive the Alien?

Quotes from the movie,

They find out the Alien's blood is acid,
Parker, "It's got a wonderful defense mechanism: you don't dare kill it."

3.Independence Day (1996)

Directed by Roland Emmerich (The Patriot, also in my top 10 war movies)
Will Smith as Captain Steven Hiller.
Bill Pullman as President Whitmore.
Brent Spiner from Star Trek even plays a small role.

This is a movie about earth being taken over by a ruthless bunch of aliens. They move from planet to planet exterminating the inhabitants and gathering resources. They will wipe out every major city in the world in just 72 hours unless something can be done.

Quotes,
After punching an alien in the head, while trying to get out of it's downed ship,
Captain Hiller, Now That's what I call A close encounter!

Captain Hiller, "Oh, no. no, you are NOT shootin' that green sh*t at me!"

4.The Abyss (1989)

Directed by James Cameron (The Titanic,Titanic can also found in my Top 10 movies ever)He also directed Aliens, a top notch alien flick!

Ed Harris as "Bud" Brigman.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Lindsey Brigman.
Michael Biehn as Lieutenant Coffey.

A nuclear submarine goes down. The government sends out a team of Navy seals. The only rig around that could go that deep was a submersible station, build for deep drilling. This underwater station has a full compliment of deep water ruff-necks. Then the paranoid team of Navy Seals show up. Now things get real interesting, The underwater aliens show up. Nukes~Aliens~Ruff-Necks~Seals makes for a good movie...

Quote from the movie,
Lindsay Brigman, "So raise your hand if you think that was a Russian water-tentacle."

5.Predator (1987)

Directed by John McTiernan
John McTiernan is my favorite Director,If he directs it, It is a good movie! Some other McTiernan movies, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October and The 13th Warrior...

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Schaefer "Dutch"
Carl Weathers as Dillon
Jesse Ventura as Blain

Humans become the hunted. This alien is a hunter. It hunts humans like we hunt a deer. This alien has the ultimate camo, it's transparent. It meets it's match when it runs across the special forces team in South America? Or does it makes human play things out of them? A great movie!

Quote from the movie,

Billy, "I'm scared Poncho."
Poncho, "Bullsh*t! You ain't afraid of no man!"
Billy, "There's something out there waiting for us, and it ain't no man. We're all gonna die."

6. Enemy Mine (1985)

Directed by Wolfgang Petersen. (Another director who ends up on every top ten list I make,The Perfect Storm, Das Boot and Air Force One...the list goes on and on).

Dennis Quaid as Willis Davidge
Louis Gossett Jr. as Jerry
This movie was very under-rated. I really enjoyed it. Two enemies in mortal combat in space. They end up shooting each other down. They both crash land on deserted planet. Do they continue the battle to kill each other or combine their wit and survive? You'll have to look around to find this one but it's worth it.

7.StarShip Troopers (1997)

Directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall)
Casper Van Dien as Lieutenant Johnny Rico.
Dina Meyer as Private Dizzy Flores.
Denise Richards as Cadet Carmen.

This move was non-stop ACTION Stompin hell out of galactic bugs from beginning to end. These bugs were ornery though. Like Independence Day, These bugs went from Planet to Planet consuming its resources, killing the inhabitants and moving on. Only in Star Ship Trooper we take it to the aliens in true galactic Marine Corps style!! Very graphic! Great special effects!

8.Star Gate

Directed by Roland Emmerich (Who directs hit after hit, The Patriot, Independence Day and Universal Soldier...)

Kurt Russell as Colonel "Jack" O'Neil
James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson

This movie has a neat twist! I still find myself wondering where those pyramids come from. The government gets a hold of an ancient gate. They acquire the expert services of Dr. Jackson. He decodes the gate and they are ready to go to the other side, (where ever, that may be) or at least they think they are. They also send along Colonel O'Neal. In the event something goes wrong he can handle it.The special effects are good, but I liked the Plot!

9. Starman (1984)

Directed by John Carpenter (The Thing)
Jeff Bridges as Starman
Karen Allen as Jenny Hayden

This one is sad and funny. There are no horrible aliens. Just an alien entity that goes into a strain a human hair and takes the shape of the mans DNA. The only problem was the man was dead. So when it pops up in the wife's front room there are some problems. The alien only has a few days on earth and it is a neat little adventure! Jeff Bridges does a great job of playing this curious alien.

10. Men In Black (1997)

Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (Wild Wild West)
Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K
Will Smith as Agent J
This movie was Great! It was extremely Funny (my side hurt for two days)

The Men In Black are secret government agents that police all aliens here on earth. Yes they are here everywhere. We (John Q Public) just don't know they're here. Agents J & K deal with aliens. These aliens eat their guns and swallow them whole. These agents do everything from getting the swallowed guns back, to assisting aliens in labor. If you like a good side splitter go rent this one.

(Honorable mention)

Pitch Black

War Of The Worlds (1953)

Species (1995)

Chronicles-Martian Episodes (1985)
based on Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, novel

Thanks for the read,

@Joe McMaster
