When I was looking around for speakers for my computer, a little name like altec lansing was at the top of my list. I had heard some of there lower end 2.1 systems before, and was very impressed. I have always been a BIG fan of altec lansing, basiclly JBL (James B. Lansing) and I have never been dissatisfied, with either JBL or Altec Lansing. I upgraded to theese, from an older set of 20 dollar Cambridge soudworks sattelites. I must say, that those little speakers, sounded very good as well. Now when I first hooked theese up, I pluged them directly to the headphone port on my Sony STR-DE845 (review coming soon) surround sound reciever, and then plugged my computer in to one of the many inputs on the back of the amp. What I wanted to have was more control over the sound of the system, and I did. However with a setup like this, one must be careful, as you can push theese speakers, to the point of no return.
Theese things are really capable of handiling lots of volume, without distortion. Possibly my favorite thing about them is the engineering they put into the cross over's. It really sounds like the bass, and mid bass, Is actually coming from the speakers themselves, Which is a very good thing. Who wants there bass to sound like it's coming for across the room? With the neodymium magnets, pushing the aluminum cones, you get accurate clear fidelity, and alot of db.
Those little drivers, have alot of movement in them for what they are. I have actually had the screws on the back rattle loose over time. Though this is not a big deal to me, It at first had me worried, beacause of the rattle that the screws were making during music listening. For anyone considering good computer speakers, with excellent sq, I would reccomend theese highly. Theese litlle things have never failed to impress me, or any of my friends. It is my opinion that theese little things will give you some of the best sound for you're dollar. The one and only thing that I could think to list as a con, is that the speaker grille (if you want to call it that) is just a little strip of plastic, vertically going down across the center of the speakers. Though they look really cool, I think that they could be a little more protected. Hopefully this review will help you on deciding on you're next invesment on computer/multi-media speakers.
