| bostonpippa's Full Review: Embassy Suites Washington, D.C. |
We had heard about the Embassy suites' free breakfasts and free drinks in the evenings and thought it was too good to be true.. but its not.
We arrived at 7am from a terrible overnight Amtrak journey and found the staff super friendly and helpful. They checked us in immediately and invited us to enjoy the free breakfast, even though we'd just arrived. One of the other reviewers got it a little wrong - its not a continental breakfast its a full breakfast. Where I come from "continental" means just cereals, pastries and maybe some fruit. The Embassy Suites has an all you can eat buffet with all the usual bacon and eggs, homefries and sausage, grits, cereals, fruit, bagels, pancakes..
Every evening from 530 to 730 they serve free drinks. You can have beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. This is also unlimited. There is a lovely courtyard and garden area in the enclosed central atrium where the breakfasts and drinks are held. You can easily find a seat at one of the many cafe tables scattered around this garden area even on a busy morning.
Our room rate was $145 per night so we didn't feel like they were jacking up the price to cover the free things. The Embassy Suites are just that, suites. Every room has a living room, kitchenette, plus the usual bath and bedroom. They are large, clean and well appointed. There is a tv in both the living and sleeping areas and the sofa converts to a bed. This could make it a very cheap holiday for a family if the kids are prepared to sleep on the pull-out. You would not feel cramped having a family of four in one suite.
The decor is a little perculiar in its choice of colors which would be the only indication that its not a superior hotel, but then again I've stayed in some really expensive places that have terrible design schemes too! You are not going to walk into your suite and be blown away by how beautiful it is, but it is spotless, comfortable, and showing no signs of wear.
The property has an indoor pool and hot tub, plus a steam room. There is a well stocked gym and a video games room. They have their own italian restaurant but we didn't try it.
The hotel is between two metro stops, DuPont Circle and Foggy Bottom. Its about a 10 minute walk to either. We didn't mind it but I heard some complain that the hotel is too far from the subway.
I found it an easy walk. There are restaurants in the immediate area but they tend to be expensive as they are attached to the many hotels. If you want a cheaper meal walk the ten minutes to DuPont Circle where there is a huge selection. It would be about $4 to go in a cab.
This place seems to be really popular with young families. I guess its because of the large suites and value for money. If you don't like kids or crowds this is not the place for you. You'll have trouble getting a quiet moment in the hot tub and at breakfast time it can be a bit like watching hogs at a trough. Some people go crazy with the free food. I guess its too much to expect sophisticated company at any place where food and drink is free!
