I recently had the opportunity to drive a 2004 Volvo V70 for one week while my wife's 02 Explorer was in the body shop (after a toll booth bit her). Needless to say, I was happy about the prospect of driving anything other than a stripped Ford Taurus rental, so off I went in my 04 V70 w/10,000 miles on the clock.
The first thing I noticed was the faded interior plastic panel that surrounded that automatic shift lever. This was quite surprising to see in a virtually brand new car with an MSRP of almost 40 grand. I also found it very cramped for my 6'4" 300lb frame. My head actually poked out of the sunroof until I tilted the seat back to an uncomfortable and unsafe position. So much for whiplash protection.
My feeling is that that for 40 thousand dollars, a BMW 5 series wagon would be a better choice if you are in the market for a premium sporty wagon. Or, spend 30k on a new Magnum with a Hemi and use the remaining 10k to buy a used Civic for your teenager. If hauling children is a concern, consider a Toyota Sienna or even an SUV Hybrid. Each of the later alternatives would offer more space for families and their luggage.
