| dlstewart's Full Review: AVERY White Laser Printer Labels AVE 5160 |
I first started using Avery Mailing Labels -- Item # 5160 as address labels. That's how Avery promotes these white labels. However, I've found these labels to be versatile and great for a number of uses.
Description
These labels come in a cardboard box about an inch deep. Inside the box are 3000 labels. There are 30 labels to a sheet and 100 sheets in the box. The labels are arranged on each 8 1/2" x 11" sheet in three columns with 10 labels in each column. Each rectangular label measures 1" x 2 5/8". The labels are smooth and are a white color that is not a glaring bright white. The finish is a flat white color.
Avery guarantees these labels as "jam free". The labels are designed to run through a printer and after printing, the labels can be individually peeled from the sheet. Note these are permanent labels for use in a laser printer.
How to Use the Labels
The labels are designed for use in software programs such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Microsoft Publisher (as well as other software programs). I use Microsoft Word and WordPerfect and know the labels work well in each of these programs. To give you a general idea of how to use the labels, I've included instructions below. These instructions may vary depending upon which version of software you are using.
Microsoft Word
Open a new blank document. Click on "Tools", then select "Letters and Mailings" and/or "Envelopes and Labels". Click "Options" to choose the correct label style. A list of label choices is arranged in numeric order. Select Avery number 5160 in the menu, and then click "OK". You can select whether you wish to type an entire sheet of labels with the same text, or whether you want to type something different on each label. If you want the labels that say the same thing, then type the text in the small box on the screen and click "New Document". A page opens with the text inserted in the labels. Now you can format the text (font, size, bold, italic, etc.). Then print the labels.
If you want each label to say something different, then click on "Options" and choose the correct label style and click "OK". Next click on "New Document" to open a document that shows a page filled with empty labels. Type in the text you wish for each label and format it. You can create as many labels as you wish. When finished, print the labels.
WordPerfect
Open a new blank document. Select "Format" and then click on "Labels". A list of label choices is arranged in numeric order. Select Avery label number 5160. A new window opens showing one label. Type the text and format it however you wish (font, size, bold, italic, etc.). Hit the "Enter" key until the next label shows on the screen and type in the text for that label. Continue until you are finished. Note: If you want all the labels to say the same thing, copy the text in the first label and paste it in the other label fields. You can create as many pages of labels as needed and print them all at the same time.
Printing the Labels
When finished creating the labels, it is time to print them. Simply place the labels in the printer tray. It doesn't matter which direction you place the labels since the labels on the sheet are symmetrical. As a rule, I place the labels in the printer so that I can read the label number written in red on the upper and lower edges of the label. Click Print ... and you are done. I have never had Avery labels peel from the sheet while printing.
These labels not only work great in a laser printer but also feed well through our Savin copy machine. We make a master label sheet on a piece of plain white paper and lay it face down on the copier glass. Then we place blank labels in the copier paper tray in place of the paper and press the copier's start button. A few times a sheet of labels has misfed in the copier causing a jam but the sheet was easy to remove. Note: Avery does not say these labels are for use in copy machines.
Avery.com
What if you don't have a software program that includes built-in templates to use Avery labels? Avery's website (www.avery.com) provides many free templates and programs to use them. Also available is a free clipart section.
You can download Avery Wizard, a free add-in program that launches with Microsoft word. This program walks the user step-by-step through creating labels, dividers and cards using Avery products. You can also download a free limited version of Avery DesignerPro Software. This product offers templates for most Avery products.
Avery also offers a free service called Avery Print. This enables you to design your labels directly online and them print the finished product from the web. This service walks you through the design of your labels, even allowing a choice of different fonts and formatting. In order to use this service, you need an internet connection, browser software such as Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat Reader. I tried Avery Print just to experiment. The labels look great, though for some reason the print toward the bottom of the sheet gradually shifted upward so that the last few printed labels printed the text over the colored band at the top of the label.
Many Uses for These Labels
These are excellent labels, and I'm constantly finding new ways to use them. Here are some ways to use these labels:
Address Labels
These labels are great as both return address labels and mailing labels. The labels are a bit small to include a graphic, but if the image is tiny, it can fit on the label with the text.
Printed Messages
Type messages on these labels and stick them to envelopes, file folders or whatever else needs a message. One idea I suggest to clients I design websites for is to create labels with their website address. When sending out mail, make sure to attach a label to the envelope -- excellent promotion.
Changes & Corrections
If you sell products where information was printed incorrectly on the packaging or perhaps the information has changed (such as a UPC code) use these labels. Print the new information on the labels and stick the labels over the old information.
Identifying Items
At work we have items on display for easy reference. Since some of these items are on high shelves, we needed an easy way to identify the item number. I typed the item numbers on these labels in a large bold font and attached each label to the appropriate item. Now everyone immediately can see the item number for each product.
Summary
I enjoy using Avery Mailing Labels -- Item # 5160. The labels cost $23.99 at Staples and OfficeMax. Office Depot sells the labels for $23.98. These are versatile labels that serve many more purposes than just as a mailing label. Stretch your imagination ... I'm sure you'll think of uses that never occurred to me!
