The best way to choose a linux distribution is based on the pro's and con's of each, and how it fits in with your desires.

If you make a convert or not, it really doesn't matter. You are one more person who has turned from the dark side, and simply by setting an example that you can deal with a stable operating system you are doing your duty :-)

Again... thanks for the comments

Agreed! I think it's great that you are spreading the word and getting more people to install Linux. I am pretty much a loner. One of these days I'll make a convert -- all I need is to encounter some poor user who is having all the trouble I had with the Redmond Monster.

You do a good job of introducing folks to a useful tool. Keep it up!!

Interesting thoughts....

you can't tell anybody what the "easiest" or "best" distro is for newbies -- because once you install a distro [snip] The knowledge you gain transfers.

You have a point. Once you've done it once, it becomes insanely easier each time you do it (which is why installing linux is pretty much a piece of cake for me right now). However, there are still points where you have to work around problems in the installer. I have found that Red Hat and especially Mandrake have installers which do the work arounds for you and take much less of the decision making process out of your hands, thus making it easier for the average newbie to do. Most of this comes from times where I have persuaded a friend to install Linux and have had to come over and help them out. I am called in much more in other distributions than I am with Mandrake or RedHat (and now Progeny).

Thanks for the comment!!!

Which Linux distro? No big deal, IMHO (Reply to this comment)
by lbbarnes
They all work, and the real question is, I think, whether to go with Linux in the first place. I started with SUSE but was very disappointed in the beta KDE they had at the time, and found the documentation to be too advanced for me. Now I'm running Red Hat ver. 7 and having a wonderful time -- not that I could not be running the latest SUSE, now that I have learned a little something. The folks at Red Hat now include a non-beta KDE, and I prefer it to Gnome (which is also in the distro). I have no need for the new kernel that's in RH 7.1 so I'll upgrade when we get RH 8.0 or so.

Two thoughts: you can't tell anybody what the "easiest" or "best" distro is for newbies -- because once you install a distro, you are no longer a full newbie. What you learn on your initial install disqualifies you, in other words. I found installing SUSE a bit of a problem, but then had no trouble with RH. Of course! The knowledge you gain transfers.

Second, I don't know how many times I have installed SUSE and RH. Once you do it, it is a snap, and I have done it over and over just to fine-tune the partitioning. No FUD.

The question, then, IMHO, is whether to go with Linux at all, or stay with Windows. I have gained a lot with my switch, and will never never never go back. Stable, powerful, easy to use, Linux is also free from 99.999% of the virus problems that make Windows such an expensive and risky OS. The only reason to stay with Windows, I believe, is if there is an app that you MUST have that is not ported to Linux. I await the improvement of The Gimp or the appearance of some other open source graphics program that genuinely competes with the professional quality of Adobe Photoshop -- otherwise, there is nothing I need that Linux will not run.

Re: Good+Article (Reply to this comment)

Good point, I probably should have mentioned them, the problem is that I haven't used them, or installed them, nor do I know anyone who uses them (I know one person who uses SUSE, but he just recently installed, so I'll have to wait a bit to get some feedback from him, then I'll probably want to try and install myself).

Caldera has the easiest install? That is worthy of checking out, as I've used the Mandrake installer and that has been one of the most impressive pieces of software that I have ever seen!!!

Good Article (Reply to this comment)

Good article, but you left out two very popular distributions worth mentioning. They are Caldera and Suse. Caldera has the fastest installation and is customized for internet and business use. Suse is very popular in Europe and is the the most comprehensive distribution available. 6 CD's worth containing I believe every linux application or demo available.

a little more, I'm glad I have a vanilla clone PC and don't need to use this stuff anymore.

You write very well.

If it wasn't for the fact that I didn't want to go through installing Linux and transferring all of my personal files yet one more time, I really would like to give Mandrake a good run through, especially as they are using the "apt for rpm" tool that I want to get my hands on.

Good luck!!!

You Make It All So Simple... (Reply to this comment)

I thought that Corel Linux showed everything that there was to see in the OS, but clearly this is not true. I'm going to pick up a mandrake distro and take another look it.

Thanks for writing a clear, easy to understand survey of the major distros. It makes my life less complex.

I was actually really hesitant about putting in what I was actually running myself. But, I figured that I was most likely biased enough through the rest of the review that it was probably quite obvious. :-)

Also an excellent overview of the differences between the distributions - very thorough. You're right about the wars breaking out - I'm not even going to mention what we're running :-).
