| jfkreviews's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7760 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
You cannot go wrong with this phone! The StarTAC ST7760 is easily one of the finest cell phones on the market and probably the best choice for under $200. I owned a StarTAC ST7760 for two years before I sold it to buy the slightly more advanced (and more expensive) Motorola Timeport model (see my review on the Motorola Timeport 8767). For those two years I found absolutely nothing about this phone that I did not like.
StarTAC’s are mini powerhouses in the mobile phone world. The flip design makes them very easy to carry in your pocket or purse. Contained in this small and light package are some of the most useful and easy to access features you’ll find today.
It would be a waste of time to list all of the features of this phone here. There are way too many and they can all be seen on the Motorola website. I will list a few of the key features that I liked the most:
· 99 number alphanumeric memory with an emergency speed dial, 9 Turbo Dial one-touch speed dial keys, and a fully alphabetized and easily searchable contact list
· Text messaging (where available)
· Keypad lock and call authentication to keep others from using your phone without permission
· Caller ID
· Voicemail features
All features are accessible via the keypad or via the three smart buttons on the side of the phone. I found that these smart buttons are virtually the only buttons you will need. They make it exceedingly easy to navigate the different menus and to call stored numbers. In fact, the only time I would ever need the number keys was when dialing a number that wasn’t already stored in memory. You can even access your voicemail with just one button once you program in your password! I have found that the voicemail and messaging features of the StarTAC are the best around. You are notified when you have a voice message and when you have missed a call. The messaging menu allows you to access a list of all your missed calls, all of you text messages, and your voicemail. Mind you, this is all done with just three buttons on the side of the phone!
I have heard very few complaints about these phones. Some people find the menu functions hard to navigate. There are a lot of them. I spent a few days with the instruction manual when I got the phone. I’ll admit that if you want a phone with no learning curve this is not the phone for you. Also, many critics point to the flip design as a weakness claiming that it is not nearly as durable as the Nokia style “plastic brick”. I agree that this phone would probably break before the Nokia in an endurance test. But, everyday normal use will not affect this phone. The internal components of the StarTAC are solid and despite the inevitable drops that this phone suffered over the years, nothing was ever upset.
An advantage of the flip design is that it makes it impossible to mistakenly press keys while carrying the phone. I’m sure you’ve all gotten a strange call from one of your phone buddies as he or she accidentally presses send and calls the first person on their speed dial while reaching into their pocket or purse for something. That just doesn’t happen with these phones.
Remember to add excellent reception to the list of accolades for this phone. Despite the obvious learning curve factor, the StarTAC ST7760 offers too much to the user for he or she to ignore. If you take time to learn about the features, you will be duly rewarded. This phone will never leave you needing more.
