The Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend this car especially for the winter. This car is amazing when it comes to safety on the snow and ice.

I bought a 2004 Volvo XC90 T6 2.9L AWD with options. I didn't get the 7 seater due to the lack of leg room but the 5 seater is good enough for me. The leather seats are very comfortable with automatic adjustments. The problem with driving the volvo is that the back view is somewhat obstructed by the back headrests. The feeling of the car is very steady yet not as smooth as one would expect. Moreover, you get a feeling that you are driving a truck. It just feels really heavy at first, but you eventually get used to it. Some people might have a problem with the loose steering wheel like I did but I got over it.
One of the options I had installed for the Volvo was the rear parking sensors. There is a beeping sound that increases in frequency as you get closer to an object and if you are within a foot of the object the beeping turns to a single solid tone. I found it very useful when I am backing my car out in tight places. The only problem is that you have to constantly keep the sensors clean for it to work properly especially after snowstorms and off-road driving. One feeling you get with the Volvo that you don't get with other cars is the feeling of safety. It comes with side air bags for all passengers and comes with safety features to prevent rollovers. During the winter when there are icy surfaces there is a "Winter button" to prevent sliding, and during severe winter storms you could use the fog light for the rear of the SUV. There is this light that comes on the left side to make it look like you have brakes on so the car behind you won't be so close. One thing I found really useful was that I couldn't lock myself out. As long as the door is open I cannot lock the door. The only way to lock the car door is to use the car key or someone inside the car could lock it.

If you have a family I would recommend the 7 seater. I am currently happy with my 5 seater b/c I don't usually have passengers in the backseat. What I noticed was that if you have the heater or cooler on, the backseat passengers won't benefit as much. It takes a long time for the back to heat or cool. If you get the 7 seater there are more air vents for the warm or cool air to pass.


The stereo system is great only when you listen to the 6 CD player. The reception for the radio wasn't great so the sound wasn't as sharp. I realized that the volvo doesn't have an external antenna on the car and that could be the reason for the bad reception for the radio, but the CD player works great. The other problem with the stereo system is that it is so complicated. There are so many ways to search and program the kind of music you want to listen to but you have to read the directions over and over again because there are so many things to learn about the system. Patience and usage are the keys to stereo happiness.


Overall I love the design and look of the Volvo XC90. The Volvo XC90 drives very well under different weather conditions. If you want a sleek looking car that is safe then Volvo XC90 is the one to choose. Just remember to test drive it first to determine what type of engine you want. I got the more powerful one.
