Pros: More reliable than my emachine's standard modem. Doesn't continually disconnect me.
Cons: So far, so good. Haven't had any problems with it.
The Bottom Line: Unlike other reviewers the modem works great for me.

I bought an emachine summer of 2003 (something I had sworn I'd never do but the price was too good). The modem that was installed in it was of course very low quality. The modem in my old computer is slower at 33.6kbps and usually connected at 31 something. With the emachine modem (Conexant brand?) I connected around 46-48 kbps but was ALWAYS getting disconnected while surfing due to rural phone line noise. I'd never had that problem with the slower modem so I decided to upgrade my emachine modem to a 3Comm 56K. Windows XP found the modem instantly. When I went to configure the modem to load drivers it said "this device is working properly". So I figured what the heck, test it. It connected at 44 kbps which I thought was disappointing at first but I soon realized that even though the connect speed was slower my actual throughput had shot way up. Pages load much faster, email loads much faster, photo files upload and download much faster and all without being disconnected during browsing. I usually get on the internet for 1-2 hours each evening before bed and I used to have to reconnect 3-4, now it's Connect Once, and done. I'll keep an eye on it and let you know of any problems I've had but so far (only 2 weeks, bought Jan '04) everythings great. $29.99 at Best Buy after $10 rebate.
Update
I've had the modem installed for over three months now and have not had any trouble with it. It connects on the first try and at a consistent 45.2 Kbps. I left the home while downloading a program today and returned over six hours later and the modem was still connected. Works great!
