| Dragonheart65's Full Review: Roller Coaster Tycoon For Windows |
Who would have thought? A thirty-something Mom with 5 kids who is deathly afraid of heights and roller coasters in general would absolutely fall in love with a Roller Coaster Tycoon PC game! I'm terribly addicted to this extremely well made and very challenging computer game. I recently purchased Roller Coaster Tycoon 2...I bought the original Roller Coaster Tycoon with Loopy Landscapes a few years ago.
It isn't just a simple task of clicking a ride and plopping it down in the middle of a park and letting it go. This game involves strategy, planning, marketing, money management, staff management and of course making sure you have plenty of restrooms for guests! Being the eyes and ears of the park you have to keep a sharp eye out for guests frequent littering and vomiting. But the main excitement is the variety of challenge parks included with these games. A slew of exciting roller coasters, gentle rides, thrill rides, water rides and concessions make this game addictive! Every park has its own objective to meet, whether it is a certain number of guests in your park by a certain year, or making a certain amount of money or meeting or exceeding monthly ride/shop tickets to keep the game exciting and challenging.
The only game strategies that were beyond me were actually BUILDING a custom designed roller coaster.I prefer layouts already designed. I have absolutely no eye for these things and the one roller coaster I designed immediately crashed on a test run! Much to my kids' delight seeing a ride crash I was devastated I couldn't even make a simulated roller coaster! The first version of Roller Coaster Tycoon had too many roller coaster crashes. The only way to avoid rides crashing was to make each roller coaster have only 1 'train'. But that meant longer queue lines and bored guests. Crashing didn't help park ratings at all! I would have to delete the entire ride, replace it and call it a different name. Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 seems to have eliminated crashes as I have yet to see one actually crash in the few months of playing this game. I also prefer Tycoon 2 as it has extra design features with roller coasters and other rides, although they cost a little more.
This game is rated E for the entire family but for young players this may be too challenging. My 11 year old son has no problem keeping up with Mom as far as park building goes but my other children younger than 10 some of the concepts like marketing and staff and guest management are beyond them. My 8 yr old son likes to play the beginner parks but needs help reading the specifics. My 5 yr old daughter prefers a park with numerous flowers, plants and dozens of fountains and statues and the few rides she actually does put in the park she makes them a nice bright shade of pink! She doesn't care about the objective she wants to make a pretty park.
Overall I would highly recommend Roller Coaster Tycoon and Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 for those who prefer simulation games. This is good clean fun for the entire family and perfect for older kids to get them away from the onslaught of fighting and shooting video games. It also teaches them a thing or two about strategy and planning.
