My Take On Oscar 73
by jeffdaddy | Mar 26 '01
Boring production, but Steve Martin was hilarious & edgy and the Academy, for once, was unpredictable. A solid show with worthy winners.

The sad thing, to me, about Julia... (Reply to this comment)
by opinionsharer
is her beauty seems to be skin deep when she comes off as being too self-absorbed. I don't think you're in a teeny minority---I've heard others including critics comment the same thing.
I agree with you, too, on Steve Martin---he was one of the big winners of the night!

How could you say that Julia's speech was self-centered?!?! her love for life really (showed) through here.

I couldn't agree more, and I love her personality. But I just called her speech "self-centered" which is really different than "conceited" (which I don't think it was). It was centered on herself. That doesn't make her evil, nor do her gushing emotions (a trait I'd never want her to lose). But it could've been focused on others (like Crowe's was, or Soderbergh's was, or like Hanks's always are), but it wasn't, and I found that to be disappointing, even to the Sally Field "you like me, you really like me" point of embarrassment.

Hey, I love Julia, and I think she earned that Oscar. I was just letdown by her speech.

Anyway, I appreciate your comments, and I'm glad you liked my essay overall. Thanks.

How could you say that Julia's speech was self-centered?!?! I know it's your own opinion, but her love for life and the reason she's labeled as "America's Sweetheart" really shown through here. She brought back the excitement that has been missing from the Oscars. She was truly THRILLED, and that's what we should see more of...rather than Mr. I have no personality Crowe. You did a great review though! Kate

Self-portrait... (Reply to this comment)

Yes, it is. Thank you. :)

And thank you for visiting my page! Yickes, I should really write something, I haven't wrote anything since last week... Having nothing to write about is depressing. :)

I thought Julia was precious, and I found Crowe intimidating. I personally don't appreciate people who come prepared to this sort of thing. It's nice to come up to the stage and calmly accept the MOST IMPORTANT AWARD you could ever win, and than unfold a large list of names, but I think it's much more enduring to give an honest, excited, general thank-you. I know if I got an award like that I would be very self-centered.

tzohar, a question: is that a self-portrait sketch on your Epinions page? If so -- very cool.

No matter how simple, I like to prop cool expressions of art. It's the Soderbergh in me. :-)

I think Julia's speech was honest, sweet and entertaining.

And self-centered. I just don't care for those kind of speeches.

Russell Crowe looked like he was about to shoot himself, so somber. SMILE, for crying out loud, you just won an oscar!

I disagree with your characterization, and quite factually he was smiling (didn't you catch the big awe-shucks grin when he first got up there?). But what's wrong about taking it seriously, too. Obviously this win meant something to him on a deeper level and he expressed that -- mostly through thanking other people, not by going on and on about how happy he was.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I'll take Crowe's and Soderbergh's style over Julia's and Sally Field's any day.

It wasn't written down.

Neither were Russell Crowe's or Steven Soderbergh's, but look at the selfless home runs they blasted.

She was honestly thrilled at being up there and should enjoy it. She didn't bother to try to contain her excitement.

I couldn't agree more. Enjoy the moment all you want, screw containing your excitement (I love Cuba Gooding Jr.'s speech from five years back). It was the self-centered focus that rubbed me the wrong way. It doesn't make her evil, but to me it lacks class and perspective.

And more than anybody that night, she knew she was walking up there, so I find it disappointing that she didn't have her thank you's and mentioning of the real-life people inflicted by the poisoned water prepared. Again, it was about her, not about the deeper things behind why she was up there to begin with.

I don't hate the woman, I was just very disappointed (particularly since her Globes and SAG speeches were very classy and thoughtful).

According to backstage reports, the first thing Julia said was that she was kicking herself for not mentioning Erin.

That's cool, it really is. But you know what -- Julia KNEW she was going to win, so I don't buy her being shocked or unprepared. And again I refer to Tom Hanks whose always prepared, always gracious, always selfless. I just think it was a letdown that Julia essentially showed up unprepared, making it mostly about herself, particularly when she could've had something very special planned.

Also Russel Crowe played nice on the podium but was back to his usual self backstage. Giving short, curt answers. Gotta love him for sticking it to the people from E!

This, again, shows what perspective Crowe has. He's all gracious on stage (where he should be), then sticks it to the tabloid losers backstage (as he should). Crowe's a stud on-screen and off.

It wasn't written down. She was honestly thrilled at being up there and should enjoy it. She just let things tumble out of her mouth and it was one of the more entertaining speeches of the night. She didn't bother to try to contain her excitement.
I think she meant to thank Erin Brockovitch. She said something about the most important person, but got sidetracked and thanked a bunch more people.
