Oscar Prediction W/ Vegas Odds!

Mar 18 '01

The Bottom Line The night figures to hold one or two surprises. Here's hoping that some of my predictions are actually correct! :-}

In a mediocre year for movies, the Oscars still are a treat for movie goers. To spice up my predictions, I've decided to add Vegas odds for the awards show. Enjoy!

Best Picture

Gladiator 2/5
Traffic 9/5
Erin Brockovich 5/2
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 3/1
Chocolat 10/1

The clear cut favorite is Gladiator for the most prestigious award. Although it was a fine movie and brilliantly combined action with drama, I still think that Crouching Tiger will pull an upset here. Gladiator may not receive as many votes because it is not fresh in people's minds whereas Crouching Tiger is just past its peak in terms of media coverage.

Best Actor

Russell Crowe 3/5
Javier Bardem 10/1
Tom Hanks 4/5
Ed Harris 8/1
Geoffrey Rush 8/1

Although I strongly want Geoffrey Rush to win for his role in Quills, I would have to predict that Tom Hanks will win this one. The only obstacle in Hanks' way is his past awards. Voters may shy away from Hanks, who has already won two Oscars for Best Actor. Russell Crowe also gave an admirable performance and may just beat out Hanks for this award.

Best Actress

Joan Allen 4/1
Juliette Binoche 5/1
Ellen Burstyn 6/1
Laura Linney 6/1
Julia Roberts 1/5

We might as well hand Ms. Roberts the award right now. There is no doubt in my mind that Julia Roberts will come away with the win here. Joan Allen has only the slightest chance to knock off Julia for this one.

Best Supporting Actor

Jeff Bridges 4/1
Willem Dafoe 4/1
Benicio Del Toro 1/2
Albert Finney 2/1
Joaquin Phoenix 4/1

I look for Joaquin Phoenix to pull a major upset here. As a budding young star, I think he deserves recognition for his magnificent job in Gladiator. Much respect to Benicio Del Toro for his role in Traffic, but it's Joaquin's time to shine.

Best Supporting Actress

Judi Dench 8/5
Marcia Gay 4/1
Kate Hudson 3/5
Frances McDormand 2/1
Julie Walters 3/1

I look for Judi Dench to bag an Oscar for Chocalat so that it does not end up empty handed. Marcia Gay Harden is also a dark horse that may come out of nowhere to win this race. This looks to be one of the closest races of the night.

Best Director

S. Daldry (Billy Elliot) 15/1
A. Lee (Crouching Tiger...) 9/5
S. Soderbergh (Erin Brock.) 6/1
S. Soderbergh (Traffic) 6/5
R. Scott (Gladiator) 3/5

Yes, Soderbergh is nominated for best director for two different movies, but that does not necessarily mean that he will win. :-} My guess is that Ang Lee will get the nod here for Crouching Tiger. The fact that Crouching Tiger has been embraced worldwide shows the amazing skills Ang Lee has as a director.

Hope you enjoyed reading my predictions. We'll see if they hold up when Oscar night rolls by.
