| seahealth's Full Review: Hawaiian Shaved Ice Electric Ice Shaver Machine E1... |
I contemplated buying this for a long time before I actually did it. My daughter and I have enjoyed many snow cones and slushies from this machine.
Basically this is a simple straight forward electric ice shaving machine. It comes with 3 molds. You fill them with water and place them in the freezer until solid. Then remove from the mold (the only tricky part), place the ice block in the shaver and press down on the top of the machine. The blade easily chews right through the block in record time, it can shave an eight ounce serving of shaved ice in about 10 to 15 seconds. You will either have enough for a very large dessert with one block of ice, or two medium sized ones. Me, I prefer to have a BIG one, so with that in mind 3 molds will give you 3 large desserts. Each ice block will yield around 2 eight-ounce servings.
Tip: To stock up on blocks of ice, you can freeze the ice in advance and then empty the blocks into freezer storage containers or bags. Once the ice molds are emptied, you can freeze another batch of blocks and repeat the process. This is a easy way to build up your block ice supply.
I found the trick to getting the ice to come out of the molds is to place the mold upside down underneath some hot running water if it doesn't pop out easily. Then just transfer the ice block to the machine.
When I bought mine, I went ahead and ordered the syrup mixes along with it. You can use sugar or an alternative sweetener since they are not pre-sweetened, which is a plus if you are watching what you eat. I highly recommend if you are going to mix up any of the syrups to buy some large squirt bottles for ease of use, and if you keep your syrups in the fridge you will not have as much melting of your shaved ice treats. They also sell the syrups premixed in squirt bottles and I have tried some of those as well. A little more convenient to use, but more costly.
You can also freeze fruit juices or a drink of your preference in the ice molds and make shaved ice that is already flavored. I have not tried to do this only because it would then require you to clean the machine and I prefer to do as little of cleaning as possible. If you only ever use plain ice blocks in your machine then you have basically no cleaning to do.
You can purchase additional blades (sold singly) and ice molds (sold in sets of 3). I personally have never had to replace the blades in mine, so I would say you probably won't need to buy them until needed. If you use the machine a lot then, you might need a blade sooner.
If you do need to clean this machine, the head where the motor is located lifts off, and you could easily wash the rest of the parts.
It does include a recipe manual as well.
