Sharp's Actius is a lovely machine, which provides fast processing power, a solid keyboard, and a remarkably large, bright screen in a three-pound package. It's the priciest portable in its class, however, and you won't get many extras for the money.
The Actius really is the best of its class. The screen is a full inch larger than any of its competitors, and the display is crisp and bright. The keyboard, while cramped (that's the main drawback to the ultraportables), has a nice response. A 56K modem is included, but so is an ethernet card, which is a nice addition. The processor is suitably speedy, and even the machine's physical appearance is top-notch: it's shiny and silver, the way a good toy should be.
The main drawbacks to the Actius can all be fixed with money. You won't find the double-life battery or extensive software package that come standard with the competing Sony VAIO. (I have heard that an extended-life battery is available for the Actius, which can boost battery life to between six and eight hours.) However, most people can pronounce the word "Actius".
If you're willing to shell out the extra cash, this is a pretty, powerful machine that you can take anywhere.
